Betsy’s Set: Sunshine Coast

Gibbo has declared it 'one of the best tracks in Queensland' and he's got a couple of best bets he's keen on.

Summary of Best Bets:

Race 2 No.4 Enterprise Private – Got home for us at $14 last start and looks the winner again.

Race 10 No.13 Moonhaven – Seems a huge price opening $23 off good trials and decent Melbourne form.

Turf Talk:

  • Rail – True
  • Big, open track and always good race days when the rail is in a good position.
  • Always feel it is a ‘strong’ horses track with the long run home.

Stats that matter:

  • Mark Currie has a good team engaged here and has been striking at 22% for this current season.
  • D.Moor is having the best run he’s had since arriving in Qld. 8 winners from his last 42 rides and has some good chances here.

Race by race overview

Race 1:

(1) Star Of Jamaica had trialled like a bomb before the debut run. Missed the kick there and the ride lacked any patience and taught the horse nothing. Drove it like a motor bike to get run down late. The trial this time in was nowhere near as good so I’m not sure what to do here. Has the race experience though and Munce stable doing amazing things all season.

(3) Dustee comes here off a Sydney trial and the second trial was much better than the first. Likely to park behind leaders and get his chance. He’s no star but this is winnable.

Birchley with 2 year olds….. For that reason alone (5) On The Clock is a huge chance. The trial at the start of the month was impressive. Led them up and got it done in decent style. Market always a guide with this stable.

Other winning chance is (6) Cause She Can. Had trialled well and then a winner on debut at Toowoomba. Beat what I think is a good one and a massive gap to the 3rd horse on that occasion.

Selections:

(6) Cause She Can
(1) Star Of Jamaica
(3) Dustee
(5) On The Clock

Suggested Bet: No bet

Race 2:

Made (4) Enterprise Private a best bet at $14 last start and he got it done easily. He is a genuine stayer who has been savaging the line and beautifully placed to make it a hat-trick. Up 4kg is the query but that doesn’t put me off. Has run the best L600-400-200m splits in both the last wins.

(7) Farwest comes out of the same race and meets the winner 3kg better. Is a get-back type who always runs on but only won 2 of 26.

(3) Prince Levi is a bit classy but had his chance in that race. Feel he is better over shorter but fitter for the run and this isn’t a very good race. Can be around the money.

(2) Texas Fireball and (8) Jenni Moreese might be next best.

Selections:

(4) Enterprise Private
(7) Farwest
(3) Prince Levi
(8) Jenni Morresse

Suggested Bet: Win (4) Enterprise Private

Race 3:

I’d have said (5) Diamond Epic was a good thing here if it wasn’t for the last run. She was a dominant 1600m winner two back and placed to win again last start. Best split between 400-200m and looked the winner but died on the run. If she is right, she will win. The concern is that she has been up a very long time and has she come to the end? 3kg claim helps this time around.

The class is (1) Last Chance Saloon who ran into Miss Joelene last start. His best form can beat these but can mix the form up a bit these days.

(3) Arizona Dreaming was always going to need some runs to get fit. Better for the last run but may need one more as they have opted to carry 61kg.

Scratchings have hurt this race.

Selections:

(5) Diamond Epic
(1) Last Chance Saloon

Suggested Bet: No bet

Race 4:

(13) Sirkel looks to get a good run in transit for Dolan. Has won or placed in 7 of 10 and placed all three runs on this track. Beat a handy one last start and will be right in this again.

(15) Velozes needs to improve but they have made a heap of gear changes and recent trial was good. Maps on speed and could surprise a few.

(2) Estrondo has good ability but has to carry the huge weight and needs everything to go right.

Selections:

(13) Sirkel
(15) Velozes
(2) Estrondo

Suggested Bet: Win (13) Sirkel

Race 5:

(3) Demon Darb and (4) Cunnamulla Fella come out of the Wave, which is better form. They were well held but I feel they are both going good enough to win here.

(6) Quothquan just another genuine chance and a horse I like. Very good fresh and will only get better with fitness through the prep.

(7) Nails Murphy has been way better placed in Qld and has been competitive at nearly every run. Was a winner this track/trip last start and takes a 3kg claim to get in light. This is harder but will be there abouts again.

My gut tells me this is too hard for (9) Capital Asset but the last win was tough and I don’t want to sell him short.

Waffled on and named most of the field here.

Selections:

(6) Quothquan
(7) Nails Murphy
(3) Demon Darb

Suggested Bet: No bet

Race 6:

Seven last start winners here and a good betting race.

I think (2) Fabulantes has a little more class than most of these but 59.5kg and gate 10 don’t make things easy. Has bumped into Grafterburners and co. the last couple so this is a nice step back.

Stablemate (5) Carbonara is in career best form and keeps improving. On speed and showed a turn of foot last start out to pinch it at Doomben. Beat (10) Ready For Aimee there and that horse savaged the line late. She is one of those horses, though, that seem to say ‘back me next time’ each run. The big track might be the key for her.

(9) Better Not Slip was a winner at second career run (this track/trip). Was an easy winner, has upside but the fact it opened fave surprises me a little.

(13) Brutal Miss just comes out of a GC Maiden but the effort that day was exceptional. Came from near last and went past them like a good horse. She can win here without surprising.

Selections:

(10) Ready For Aimee
(13) Brutal Miss
(2) Fabulantes
(5) Carbonara
(9) Better Not Slip

Suggested Bet: No bet

Race 7:

Absolute lottery.

(14) Arabian Rose has a good overall record (10:4:1:1) and this is her home track where she has won 4 of 5. Put away Sultry Siren easily last start and only a 2kg swing here. She looks the one to beat with any luck from the gate.

(15) Pierata’s Gem is a much better horse than her record suggests. Even last start 6th was excellent behind Poster Girl and Scripted who have been incredible lately. I’d have had her on top from a good draw but gate 16 is a concern.

(16) Bengal Diamond has a good turn of foot and a nice winner last start. I was on every run until that, so fair to say I’m a little off her at the moment.

Selections:

(14) Arabian Rose
(15) Pierata’s Gem
(16) Bengal Diamond

Suggested Bet: No bet

Race 8:

Not much speed here and might pay to land near the speed.

Of the ones up in the weights, (1) Rockribbed is the one I trust the most. Two solid wins in Listed company and then 4th in The Buffering. That is good form for this and just has to lump the 60.5kg. Might be our leader and that will help.

If it was 1200m (5) Pereille might be a good thing. Has been very good since joining Gollan and last start was excellent. Just the runs at 1300m and 1400m haven’t been as good in the past. Better horse now? Maybe…

(6) Anemacore has promised so much but had been untrustworthy for a long time. Absolutely loves the home track (4:2:2:0) and the trip (4:2:1:0). Rodd knows the horse well, he is in career best form and this is his chance to win a good race.

(11) El Morzillo can go in numbers if a drop of rain falls. Has been strong late in races but looks to map out the back and not suited here.

(14) Esjay has been on the podium his last 6 starts and won 3 of them. Hard to knock one in career best form. This is a lot harder but has the feather weight to help.

Selections:

(6) Anemacore
(1) Rockribbed
(5) Pereille

Suggested Bets: Win (6) Anemacore

Race 9:

Nearly the hardest race of the day.

Wide gates don’t worry (4) Hell as he has so much speed he can overcome them. The last win sums him up. Cross them, go at a decent tempo and steal the race on the corner. Nice 3kg claim and he is the one they have to catch. Last 50m might be heart in the mouth stuff.

(5) Battlefield is a consistent type in a stable that has been on fire. Always right in the finish around CL6 grade and usually strong at the end of his races. One of the main hopes.

It’s the type of race (6) Hatchet can win. Forget last start with horrible tactics as this horse is not a leader. From the good gate and a few pairs back, he could improve sharply and not surprise me.

Have loved what (12) Zouperb has done all prep and like the fact Harley gets the ride. Better known over 1100m but was 3rd best L200m in Listed grade last start over this trip and can flash late here.

I’ve never really been a (14) Jonny Da Wolf man but the fresh run was good and has a decent 2nd up record. Should find a spot from the gate and might be the first one out chasing Hell. His best form has him a winning chance for sure.

Selections:

(4) Hell
(14) Jonny Da Wolf
(5) Battlefield
(12) Zouperb

Suggested Bets: No bet

Race 10:

Bit of a weird race. All of them at the top have claimed but I’d have liked a couple down in the weights to have done the same and get in very light.

This is the right trip for (3) Power Of The Brave who is a fast horse. Gate is a help, claim is a help and it’s just the last 50m that will be the query. Looks a leading hope for a good stable.

(14) Yoyo Yeezy is the horse on the way up. Has won 3 of 4 but the even money quote seems crazy to me in this field. One of the main hopes but I can’t get it anywhere near that price against these tried and tough older horses.

Have liked the trials of (13) Moonhaven since joining Currie. Has travelled sweetly in both and can land off the speed and be strong late here. Form doesn’t read the best but the runs were decent in Melbourne.

The gate is the issue for (7) Port Erin. He’s got a great turn of foot and was in great form last prep. Have liked the trials this time in and just needs some luck in running to not be caught wide.

(4) Krakarib lacks a little class but have to respect the form this prep. Gets the run of the race and every possible chance here.

Selections:

(13) Moonhaven
(3) Power Of The Brave
(14) Yoyo Yeezy
(7) Port Erin

Suggested Bets: E/W (13) Moonhaven at big odds.
