Tuesday’s Randwick trials caught the eye, particularly with the 3YO son of Snitzel, Beadman, having his second trial for the preparation as he returns off the back of an eight-length romp in the Listed Ken Russell Stakes at the Gold Coast over 1200m on a Heavy 8.
He kicked off the prep with a quiet 790m hit-out, ridden off speed with James McDonald in the saddle, making up smart ground late. On Tuesday morning he was given a much more vigorous ride over 1050m and produced slick overall time.
| Heat | Distance | Horse | Overall Time | L600m |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1050m | Memo | 64.20 | 34.51 |
| 3 | 1050m | Beadman | 63.47 | 34.17 |
| 4 | 1050m | Perfect Justice | 65.57 | 34.31 |
| 5 | 1050m | Roselyn’s Star | 63.46 | 34.32 |
| 6 | 1050m | Nitro | 63.83 | 34.96 |
| 7 | 1050m | Augusta National | 65.16 | 35.22 |
| 8 | 1050m | Perfect Apple | 64.73 | 35.04 |
He ran the second-fastest overall time of the morning (Roselyn’s Star in Heat 5 was quickest) and the fastest last 600m in 34.17.
What I was looking for in this second trial was Beadman to begin well, land on speed, then click up through his gears under light riding and put his rivals away in fast time. He did three of the four things – the query was that he couldn’t shake off his rivals, with Vetwelve (who contested a Midway last start, no disrespect) idling up to him as he felt the pinch late. I would have liked to see him a bit stronger through the last 100m, but what I did like was that he was solid through the line, which is always a key guide.

Visually, it may have looked like a flat trial for Beadman, but considering Vetwelve’s race fitness, the firm deck, and the fact he still worked through the line, I’d mark it as a pass overall.
The key sign will be whether McDonald sticks first up and what track conditions he faces. I’d suggest Beadman may be a 1–2L better horse with some give in the ground.
