Trainer fined for punching brother

A brotherly bust-up has cost one trainer $5,000 while a spray to a Racing Victoria manager cost another $2,000.

Racing Victoria stewards fined Jack Laing for whacking his brother Aaron twice in March, according to stewards.

In the steward’s report released on Thursday, the heated altercation between the Laings, who are both trainers, happened at the Cranbourne Training Centre.

The inquiry, adjourned in March pending a Victoria Police investigation, heard evidence from both brothers and several witnesses about the clash on March 11.

Jack Laing admitted engaging in both a verbal and physical altercation with his brother, punching Aaron in the face at least twice. He pleaded guilty and was fined $5000.

Stewards noted his guilty plea when fining Jack, his previous record, the fact it was a family dispute, and that the matter had also been dealt with at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court.

The second matter involved a late-night phone call from trainer Julien Welsh to Racing Victoria’s Eastern Region Manager and Risk Advisor, Rod De Bomford, on September 9.

Welsh pleaded guilty to misconduct after using improper and insulting language during the call.

He was fined $2000, with stewards considering his guilty plea, previously good record, clear remorse and his subsequent apology to De Bomford.
