Caulfield carnage: TAB punters turn $3,000 into $136,000

Winnasedge and Coeur Volante proved a costly combination for TAB as two punters landed monster Caulfield collects.

A couple of TAB punters turned Caulfield into their own personal ATM on Saturday, landing monster collects thanks to a pair of winners late in the card.

Winnasedge and Coeur Volante were the two names TAB traders may have been muttering under their breath on Saturday night after they combined to deliver some serious damage.

One punter simply loaded up.

They placed $2,000 on a Caulfield double, taking Winnasedge in Race 7 at $5.50 before rolling into Coeur Volante at $5 in Race 8. Combined odds of $27.50. Collect: $55,000.

Beautifully played.

But another TAB customer went one step further, adding First Chorus at $2.70 into the mix.

The $1,000 treble featured Winnasedge at $5.50, Coeur Volante at $5.50 and First Chorus in the last at $2.70.

There are few more nerve-racking feelings in racing than getting to the final leg of a multi with a monster collect staring you in the face. First Chorus was sent out favourite and, with $81,000 riding on the result for one TAB punter, duly got the job done.

Mind you, the punter would’ve been sitting pretty happy with themselves when Jamie Mott had the mare beautifully positioned, one out, one back, stalking the speed like a panther eyeing off its prey.

The relief at the winning post? No doubt hard to beat.

The big collects weren’t confined to Caulfield, with one punter taking the scenic route through Ipswich and Beaudesert to turn $150 into more than $7,000 last Tuesday and Wednesday.

Their five-leg multi started with Beaudesert winners Sequel at $2.40 and Statement of Truth at $1.45 on Tuesday.

Riez Souvent at $2.50, Moshulu Spirit at $2.25 and Petite Palace at $3.20 were the Ipswich side of the equation on Wednesday.

Five legs. Two tracks. Combined odds of $48.

The $150 investment returned $7,300.

A much smaller outlay also produced a healthy result for another TAB customer who went shopping at Doomben and Rockhampton.

They invested $100 on a three-leg multi featuring Hellova Nature at $2.60 and Kiplings Journey at $6 to win at Doomben, with Zoology to place at $4.40 in Race 7 at Rockhampton sandwiched in between.

At combined odds of $68, the treble returned $6,800.

Not quite the $81,000 landed at Caulfield, but turning a pineapple into nearly seven large isn’t a bad way to spend a Saturday.
