Robbie Waterhouse wants to follow an Australian bookmaking tradition and field at the Indian Derby in Mumbai next February.

Waterhouse has taken his bag to New Zealand and courses around Australia, while also being a regular at Royal Ascot, and saw an opportunity when the ring was opened up in India.

He put his name forward to the Royal Western India Turf Club and sees it as another challenge if they allow him to stand.

“I’m waiting for a response from the club, I have sent them an email and hopefully I can get a spot,” Waterhouse said. “It used to be a thing where Australian bookmakers would go to India for big meetings 100 years ago.”

“I have already gone to Royal Ascot, and I would like to experience a different race meeting in India. It would be exciting to be at Derby day over there.”

“I would like to go over for a couple of weeks if I stand at the Derby meeting.”

The Indian Derby is held at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on the first Sunday in February.
