TAB market movers: Big-price moves as early shoppers are busy at Caulfield and Randwick

Monday’s nominations have sparked some significant early betting moves ahead of another massive weekend at Caulfield and Randwick, with several runners attracting support at double-figure odds.

Note: These are all in markets (no refunds if your horse doesn’t run). 

We’ll largely leave the Caulfield Cup and Everest markets alone for now, with Tuesday’s barrier draws likely to reshape betting on both features.

There has, however, been an interesting Everest development. With plenty of discussion around Sydney’s weather forecast, Ka Ying Rising has eased from $1.30 to $1.40, while Tempted has firmed from $6 into $5.

Caulfield:

At Caulfield, one of the more interesting moves has been for Chris Waller’s Sing Your Song, backed from $34 into $15 for the Thousand Guineas. The filly was an unlucky, fast-finishing third over 1400m at Kensington last week, a run that clearly hasn’t escaped the attention of punters.

Regal Ambition heads betting at $4 for Team Hayes, while second favourite Over The Bridge has been nominated for three races: the Thousand Guineas, Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and Gothic Stakes (1400m). She’s also the $4 favourite for the Blue Sapphire, a market that has otherwise been relatively quiet.

I’m Foxing has been a major firmer in the Caulfield Sprint, crunched from $26 into $9. She finished his previous campaign with four consecutive wins, and punters are clearly expecting him to return in similar form. Cavalry Girl remains the $2.20 favourite.

Valice heads Caulfield Classic betting, where there has been only modest activity. Vantaa ($11 into $8), Aragog and Miss Waititi (both $15 into $11) have attracted support, while Mack The Knife has shortened from $101 into $26. Miss Waititi is also the $3.50 favourite for the Ethereal Stakes should connections elect to tackle her own sex.

There’s been a much stronger push for Private Eye, backed from $8 into $4 to win the Harry White Classic for the second consecutive year. The veteran looks particularly well treated under the set weights and penalties conditions.

Concord Connie is a dominant $2.25 favourite for the Tristarc Stakes, with the market expecting her to bounce back from a first-up defeat at Mornington. At a bigger price, Merrigold has shortened from $51 into $26. She’s still searching for a run in last weekend’s Northwood Plume, and would have to be some chance if she backs up. She ran second at Caulfield during the summer on a seven-day turnaround.

Randwick:

At Randwick, Autumn Glow remains prohibitively short at $1.35 for the King Charles III Stakes, ahead of Ceolwulf ($4) and Pride Of Jenni ($6).

Unleashing has firmed from $3.50 into $2.80 in the Angst Stakes, while Polymnia has been backed from $8 into $4.50. That’s an interesting move for a mare who has managed just one win from 21 starts!

Sing Your Song has also been well supported in the Reginald Allen Quality, firming from $6 into $4, while Ciaron Maher’s Calamari Ring has shortened from $8 into $5. Where Waller elects to run his filly will be worth watching.

Skyhook heads Silver Eagle betting, although Beiwacht has been backed from $4.50 into $3 and is challenging for top billing.

Meanwhile, Overpass has firmed from $6 into $4.50 for the Sydney Stakes, the Everest consolation, with Grafterburners ($15 into $11) the only other notable mover.

There are plenty of decisions still to come with final fields, barriers and race placement, but Monday’s early markets have already thrown up some fascinating betting activity.
