There was an absolute self-belief about jockey Chad Schofield when he arrived at Randwick on Saturday.

While the racing world expected Ka Ying Rising to take the Everest Trophy back to Hong Kong again, Schofield thought otherwise.

“She is so special, and she hasn’t been beaten in five starts since this race last year,” Schofield said. “I went out there knowing I would have to be inch-perfect, but I knew I could beat him.”

That positive attitude gave Tempted a long-neck victory, and maybe the slightest doubt in Zac Purton’s mind about Ka Ying Rising making it 22 wins in a row.

Schofield had barrier one and used it as he had discussed with his father and former champion hoop Glyn on Tuesday.

“He doesn’t need much help, but we talked about it after the draw on Tuesday, and I told him one was the biggest positive he had,” Glyn Schofield beamed, waiting for his boy to come back.

“She could be closer and be where he wanted to be, and he did it perfectly.

“Watching that is better than any big race I won in my career.”

Schofield, who will be managed by his father going forward, draws on his knowledge.

“Dad and I talk about a Hawkesbury maiden or midweek, we talk all the time, so it wasn’t anything special,” Chad said.

“But it made me comfortable and more confident.”

Schofield took advantage of the gate and executed with precision. He controlled every aspect of the race from tempo to when it was won.

They ran 33.93 from the gates, because of Schofield, and he had enough horse to run 34.28 for an overall time 1.08.21.

The consequences of Tempted kicking up in the first 200m compounded the outside draw for Ka Ying Rising, who was five-wide with Savvy Hallie, Spicy Martini, Blue Door that were putting the speed on.

After 200m, Schofield took hold of Tempted and found cover between leader Savvy Hallie.

Purton did the same but instead trying the front. He back a length or so off the speed but still very wide.

And it was hot.

Schofield had timed his move to take cover perfectly and it was the break he needed.

“First time I’ve really ridden her and asked her from the start,” Schofield said. “I normally just ride her to relax and trust her to be far too good late.

“But it was a different race today.

“We had the world’s best sprinter, the world’s best horse. I had eyes for him, and I knew he wasn’t up there and I held my spot and kept him deep and I’m pretty sure that made Zac [Purton]  have to come back.

“From there, I had the perfect trip. I came off from behind the two leaders, and I hit the front very early, a long way out.”

Schofield drove through at the 300m and made his decisive move putting three lengths on rivals as Ka Ying Rising battled.

“The way she kicked I didn’t think anything was going to get near me,” Schofield said. “I had to be inch perfect when you had a horse like that chasing, and luckily I was.

“It is a long way up that straight.”

The final 100m showed just how good Ka Ying Rising out on his feet, he lifted and lunged but was too late.

“My horse did do all that work. I’m so proud of him,” Ka Ying Rising’s trainer David Hayes said. “He was still the strongest horse late and a stride past the line he is in front, but that doesn’t matter.

“She was just too good today.”

Purton added that Randwick is not Sha Tin and Ka Ying Rising finds it a challenge.

“I don’t know what it is about this track, but he struggles here for some reason,” Purton said. “He was gone at the 300m but only his heart and class got him that close.”

The final margins were fine a long neck with neck back to Joliestar in third, who had saved every bit of ground around the turn.

The best horse and best ride had taken the day.

“This mare was there to be beaten but she did it! She went forward, made her own luck, and ‘God’, this is amazing,” winning trainer Ciaron Maher said. “We don’t know how good she is and her best could be to come.”
