Dean Watling has identified a handful of sharp trial performers across Randwick, Warwick Farm and Rosehill, headlined by some promising juveniles and a couple of high-profile returnees. Here are the key runners to follow from this week’s heats.
Fangirl – Chris Waller (James McDonald)
Randwick H1 1208m – Mar 27
Wanted to highlight her here. 23 weeks off and given a nice spell after a busy enough spring. She’s an elite fresh-up galloper and looked beautiful in her action here. She goes to the 1400m All Aged first up where Jimmysstar isn’t at his best, Giga Kick is, but she is $6.50
Mister Rizz – O’Shea & Charlton (Zac Lloyd)
Randwick H5 1050m – Mar 27
Eye-catching first Australian trial by this UK import. Will get over ground and was last seen running 5th in the Darley Stakes at Newmarket over 1810m. Looked full of sprint in this heat and worked very well past the post. Down to trial again Friday.
Girl About Town – O’Shea & Charlton (Zac Lloyd)
Warwick Farm H7 821m – Mar 30
Impressive first trial for this 2yo daughter of Zousain. She didn’t have much room at all in the straight but was travelling sweetly. She got out very, very late and punched through the line very impressively. Look for a second trial now.
Call Me Zeus – David Pfieffer (Tommy Berry)
Warwick Farm H12 821m – Mar 30
Eye-catching debut trial. 3yo gelding who got a long way back in this heat before making up significant ground late, back towards the inferior inside going. Looks to have talent, needs another trial now.
Husk – Team Hawkes (Tyler Schiller)
Rosehill H7 900m – Apr 2
This trial caught me off guard, slick overall time and showed a very smart turn of speed to put her rivals to the sword. She has mixed her form but this is the best I have seen her at the trials. Ready to kick off the prep now.
Wild Atlantic – Team Hawkes (Tyler Schiller)
Rosehill H8 900m – Apr 2
Good overall time for the 2yo heat. This was his first trial back for the prep versus St Gotthard’s second trial. He showed a stack of ability in his first ever trial and backed it up here off a 19-week freshen. Keen to see a second trial now.
Capital Illusion – Michael Freedman (Tommy Berry)
Rosehill H9 900m – Apr 2
Second trial for the prep for this filly. She is very well built for a 2yo and covers the ground with absolute ease. Yet to be let go in her trials but looks ready to explode. Like her.
