AFL umpire and racing analyst Nick Foot

AFL umpire and racing analyst Nick Foot

Analysis: In defence of Nick Foot amid AFL storm

Nick Foot has come under fire over his dual role in AFL and racing, but the backlash is overblown

For context, I have never met Nick Foot.

AFL umpire, racing analyst and Sportsbet contributor, he has a foot in many prominent roles [pun attended].

My only interaction with Foot was when he sent me a passive aggressive message via X earlier this year over a story he didn’t like on Betsy.

While I thought his message was odd, I respected his right to have a crack, and for having the fortitude to at least seek answers.

But I enjoy his racing content.

Outside of officiating some of Australia’s biggest football games, Foot does some engaging racing content with his colleague Dave Strehlau on the 2 Units podcast.

Controversially for some, Foot and Strehlau also appear for Sportsbet and the gambling giant’s Get On products. Again, much of the content is entertaining.

How his racing role in anyway should impact his ability to officiate an AFL game borders on an overeaction of significant proportions.

Foot and his dual role have again been shoved into the spotlight after Port Adelaide star Zak Butters was reported for abusive language towards him on Sunday.

I am not commenting on the game in question or Foot’s performance – I didn’t watch it. Nor does it matter in the big picture. Butters’ post match interview raised questions about his clash with Foot – and the umpire’s handling of the situation.

SEN’s Tom Morris has since reported Butters’ comments allegedly ‘’questioned his integrity as an umpire’’. We’re not alleging Butters made any link regarding Foot’s two roles, but plenty of others have.

Morris wrote lawyers have been engaged.

While it’s not yet clear precisely what Nick Foot believed Zak Butters said to him, what has become clear is that Butters (allegedly) questioned his integrity as an umpire.

Foot has claimed he did so without using the word ‘cheat’. Lawyers involved, a possible tribunal hearing…

The saga has unleashed the experts on social media, who say it is impossible for Foot to hold both roles – a racing analyst for a variety of wagering operators plus an AFL umpire. Some of the insults are far worse.

Let’s be clear – the insinuation is that Foot might officiate to benefit the gambling giant. Looking past the simplistic optics, it’s unfair and insulting.

Because unless Autumn’s Glow’s next start is at the MCG, then I’m missing something.

Foot operates within two heavily regulated industries.

Firstly, every single decision he makes on the field is closely analysed.

Every single time Foot blows his whistle – or doesn’t – his performance is evaluated and graded. Believe it or not, it’s incredibly difficult and competitive to be an AFL umpire.

Everything from how Foot talks to the players to the angles he runs on the field to be able to officiate is scrutinised. It’s all on camera too.

If he happened to make a series of wrong calls in a single game, it places his future at risk. For a bloke who has been chosen to officiate the AFL’s biggest games, it clearly ain’t happening.

He can barely put a foot out of line without scrutiny [last joke, we promise].

Even tighter regulations would cover his work with Sportsbet.

His work with the wagering body was signed off by the AFL, and it’s a strictly racing role only.

What Foot says [and I assumed even punts on, plus probably those in his inner-circle] would be very closely watched.

If Foot had a good lawyer, he could clean up a few for defamation on social media for their work on Monday, so he never had to umpire or work for Sportsbet again.

Talking of money, AFL umpiring doesn’t pay anywhere near the riches of the players.

As AFL boss Andrew Dillon correctly pointed out, umpires need work outside of football to survive. Flexible work too that would allow umpires to travel for games. For Foot, that work is trying to pick fast horses.

“Nick Foot is one of our best umpires — a grand final umpire last year,” Dillon said in 2025.

“Our umpires are incredibly professional, elite decision-makers. But the majority of them also have work outside of umpiring.”

“Nick’s worked in and around the racing industry for a number of years. We’ve worked very closely with him on how that plays out, and his extension of the role that he’s now into … there’s no crossover with his umpiring.”

The AFL, for one, currently make tens of millions of dollars from its partnerships with wagering bodies, including Sportsbet. A far greater deal than one umpire out of four during a game that also happens to do one show a week on horse racing.

The obvious view from the start is that there should be nothing wrong with working as a racing analyst – or Sportsbet. Gambling is a billion-dollar industry that employs thousands.

Wagering is a legitimate pastime – much like yelling at the TV following a poor decision. Betting, or the notion of it, in society is on the nose somewhat but that shouldn’t impact one’s career or ability to feed your family.

There has not been a single suggestion or example why Foot can’t umpire games of footy and pick fast horses or do a media show for Sportsbet. If he was spruiking odds on Brownlow betting, then that would be an entirely different scenario.

The AFL were right to back Foot in 2025 and should so again, but you can’t help but feel that one of the parties here might buckle at some stage to public pressure.

But the implication that Foot can’t do both is simplistic at best, offensive at worse.
