Bookies hold firm as Group 1 Saturday delivers swings and saves
Anthony “Juppy” Jupp has lifted the lid on a volatile Saturday for Ponybet, where early wins, feature race drama and late international betting combined for a solid result for the book.
There wasn’t a huge wave of confidence heading into Saturday. With the fuel squeeze biting into punters’ wallets, turnover was expected to be patchy and more selective than usual.
“We were heading into this Saturday with subdued expectation as the fuel crisis hit the punters in the pocket,” Anthony “Juppy” Jupp said.
“But there were three Group 1s around Australia and there were winners to be found.”
That proved to be the case. What followed was a day of constant swings, where positions had to be managed across multiple meetings, with momentum shifting between bookmaker and punter from race to race.
‘Bookies horse’ gets the ball rolling
The day began well at Flemington, where Ponybet was keen to take on She’s An Artist. While they did not get as much on as hoped, it still resulted in an early $6,000 collect.
“She’s a bookie’s horse,” Juppy said.
That early buffer didn’t last long. At Roma in Queensland, Ponybet laid $2,000 at $2.90 on Mafioso, only to see it get the job done.
“Roma gets me again,” Juppy said.
Back at Flemington in Race 3, Ponybet laid $3,000 at $3.60 on dominant winner Santono Glow and tried to build the book around it. The result was manageable, but not decisive, and the middle part of the card followed a similar pattern.
Rosehill provided a sharper setback. Southend, a $7.50 chance, proved costly and clipped the running tally, before a small international moment went their way.
“We took a bet of $1,000 at $5.50 at Hanshin in Japan, which thankfully ran second. There’s nothing more frustrating than doing five-and-a-half on a random international meeting in the midst of a big day locally,” Juppy said.
From there, results at Flemington and Rosehill began to fall into place, allowing the book to build into a decent lead heading into the features.
The Australian Cup turns the day
The Australian Cup shaped as the key betting race and delivered.
“The Australian Cup looked a terrific betting race,” Juppy said.
Ponybet took a strong stance against the major hopes, laying Birdman and Mark Twain heavily, with smaller exposure around Pride Of Jenni and Leica Lucy. Ultimately a cigarette paper separated Light Infantry Man and Pride Of Jenni , but the result landed their way.
“We had to sweat the photo but we got the right result,” Juppy said.
It proved pivotal, delivering around an $8,000 swing and giving the book control heading into the latter stages.
Rosehill scare keeps things interesting
That buffer was quickly tested at Rosehill in the Emancipation Stakes, where punters rallied around Idle Flyer and built a meaningful liability through a mix of larger bets and steady smaller support.
“The punters only wanted Idle Flyer,” Juppy said.
By jump time, Ponybet had sent the runner around with roughly $10,000 in exposure.
“It looked like we might get the cash when she was buried away, but once clear she quickly put that thought to bed,” Juppy said.
“Ouch.”
A global grind to the finish
Away from the features, the broader program played its part. Doomben was particularly kind, with Ponybet not dropping a race, while Morphettville tracked well until the last, where $2,400 at $7.50 on Gold Spirit tightened the position again.
With Ascot abandoned, attention shifted offshore.
“Vaal Race 5, No.5 The Specialist, we took $3,000 at $4.60, so dusted $10,000 there in South Africa,” Juppy said.
“We also did $12,000 at Seoul, we were in the red at Meydan but got that back at Mannheim.”
The unsung heroes
In the end, it was not just the Group 1 races that determined the outcome.
“The trots, dogs and footy results were friendly,” Juppy said.
“God bless the Cowboys (who knocked off the Storm in the NRL).”
A solid result in a tricky market
Given the cautious lead-in and the volatility throughout the day, it was a strong result for Ponybet. There were early setbacks, feature race pressure and a nervy international finish, but the book held together when it mattered.
“It was a solid day for the joint,” Juppy said.
A day that could have gone either way ultimately landed in the bookmaker’s favour.
“Everyone here at Ponybet would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Easter.”
