Punters were left aghast when despised roughie Balgowan stormed home to claim race six at Tatura on Monday – well, all bar those sharp enough to back the five-year-old mare.
The Chris Davis-trained runner was sent out $101 with most fixed-odds operators, returned $115.00 on the Victorian tote, and was matched around $150 on the Exchange.
It proved a red letter day for the Davis stable, who later landed a $1500 double when Jayzeal took out the last at $10.
Balgowan’s boilover may have floored punters, but it didn’t shock jockey Sam Kennedy, who said post-race:
“I don’t know if it was that unexpected. I know she was big in the market, but when you have a good look at her replays you can see that the wide gate(s) just keep stuffing her around. We were just lucky today that they went so quick and we got a nice trial. She was able to show what she actually has in the tank.”
Exotics were further boosted when 80/1 pop Spinosaurus filled third, adding spice to the dividends.
The win marked Balgowan’s first success since March 2024, when she broke her maiden under former trainer Mick Kent.
On face value, the Trifecta payout of $22,066 seemed underwhelming, but with just $19,284 in the pool – plus a $5,250 jackpot component – punters shouldn’t be surprised. Needless to say, the First Four went unwon.
