The Melbourne Racing Club now concedes its track at Caulfield on Saturday ‘’didn’t perform to the standard’’ after widespread criticism.

Punters and participants were critical of the track where it was clear lanes 6-8 were dominant, with nine of the 10 winners coming through there from the last 200m. Feedback from participants matched the data.

The club told Betsy on Sunday they were ‘’comfortable’’ with the performance of its track.

Prominent owner John O’Neill was one vocal critic, calling the track a ‘disgrace’ and ‘unprofessional’ that was not fit for city racing.

On Monday, the club now conceded the track ‘’didn’t race at its best’’.

In a statement, Melbourne Racing Club Head of Racecourses, Michael Suey, said the club had ”a clear plan in place ahead of the next race meeting”.

“The team has thoroughly inspected the Caulfield track following Saturday’s meeting and has a clear plan in place to ensure the racing surface is presented in the right condition for the Easter Cup program on April 4.”

“We accept the track didn’t perform to the standard we expected on Saturday and take responsibility for that.”

“The Caulfield track has had an increased workload in recent weeks, with six of the past nine Saturdays raced on the course proper, including three meetings in the true position. In those circumstances, the track didn’t race at its best.”
