Take Us On: Beirne targets overbet runners at Eagle Farm & Hawkesbury

Beirne is keen to take on a heavily-backed sprinter resuming at Eagle Farm

As always, Shaun Beirne is happy to put his money (or prices) where his mouth is. As founder of Bet Legends, his approach from day one has been been to ‘take punters on’ where he thinks he has an edge.

The Beirne name is famous in racing and bookmaking. As a lifelong form student, Shaun is well equipped to put his opinion on the line, and he continually invites punters to take him on with inflated odds on runners he things the market has over-rated.

This weekend he’s keen to oppose punters at both Eagle Farm and Hawkesbury.

Eagle Farm – Race 8: Private Harry

Private Harry looms as one of the key talking points on the Eagle Farm card, but Beirne is happy to take him on at the current price.

“His Galaxy win was good, no doubt, but that was in a race where the on-pace bias really played into his hands,” Beirne said.

“He didn’t come up last prep, and when you go through his profile, there just isn’t enough depth there to have him as short as he is here.”

There’s some intrigue with the move to the Chris Waller yard, but Beirne isn’t convinced it’s enough to justify the market confidence.

“Waller might improve him, but you’re still taking a very short price on a horse that needs a few things to go right. At around $3, I just can’t have him.”

Hawkesbury – Race 3: Viewpoint

Viewpoint steps out of maiden company and into a much tougher assignment, and Beirne believes the market may be overestimating his readiness to handle the jump.

“His ratings have been fair in maiden grade, but this is a different level and he’ll need to take a big step to justify the price,” he said.

Adding to the concern is the likely race shape, with Viewpoint set to face a tricky run in transit.

“The map is horrendous for him. He’s either going to be caught wide or forced to do too much work early, and that’s not what you want stepping up in grade.”

With little margin for error at the price, Beirne is comfortable opposing.
