The Metropolitan: Soul Of Spain $7 (Bet365)
Chris Waller’s Soul Of Spain impressed last start in the Newcastle Cup. He’d been taking on exposed Queensland gallopers in smart fashion, and at Newcastle he was backed off the map, with Zac Lloyd switching from Travolta to take the ride.
He got a perfect run along the fence and produced a career best performance in a visually impressive win. Dropping to 50.5kg here, with Lloyd staying aboard, he looks perfectly set for the 2400m, a distance that suits him. He has proven stamina, with a 3,319m victory in the UK while carrying 61kg.
One of the best $7 all-in plays we’ve seen in some time.
Danehill Stakes – Tentyris $3.50
This star Godolphin colt returns off the back of an injury setback in the autumn. It’s easy to forget he dominated a Todman field, beating Wodeton, Beiwacht, and Nepotism. He’s been brought along slowly, with his latest jump-out at Flemington last week showing he’s very sharp.
He has a win down the straight before and looks silky odds here – I had him marked as the clear favourite in this race.
Breeders Plate – Eviction Notice $2.50
Happy to take this price on the smart Stay Inside colt. Sure, $2.50 for a 2YO on debut without a barrier looks short, but his recent trial – time, action, and untapped potential – has me confident in trusting my judgment.
The 1000m start and his tactical speed should negate any barrier concerns. Another big tick is his stable – Waterhouse and Bott do 2YOs better than anyone.
Can’t wait to see the cover come off him on race day.
