The racing heads to Cranbourne on Thursday, and it’s the kind of meeting that screams “find me a maiden winner.” Matt Welsh has circled a few debutants worth your attention.
Cranbourne Race 2 – Silver Lightning/Gentle Steel
It’s not often you see the Peter Foster stable make waves outside the picnic scene, but Silver Lightning could be his bolt from the blue. This son of D’Argento has shown promise in a couple of jump-outs and gets the services of Daniel Stackhouse from a lovely draw. He should land in a forward spot and at double-figure odds, he’s a live hope with plenty of upside.
Gentle Steel was well-backed on debut at Sale but didn’t seem 100% comfortable on the heavy going. She had trialled very well prior and having only had one soft jump-out this time in should derive good fitness benefit from that Sale outing. She strikes a very winnable race today and I have her marked favourite – so the $5 is value.
Race 3 – Take Speed EW
This is a moderate maiden, to say the least. Matt Laurie has had a terrific season and this son of Savabeel can add another winner to his tally. He wears the barrier blanket on debut which suggests he has had some issues at the gates. Like that he draws a few off the fence so if he is slow he can quickly try and get forward into a reasonable position in run. He has shown enough ability across a number of jump-outs to suggest he can win a race like this.
Summary:
-
Race 2: Back Silver Lightning and Gentle Steel
-
Race 3: Take Speed each way
