Fortitudine has announced himself as one of Europe’s most exciting staying prospects after a devastating 21-length debut victory at Kempton that has already prompted comparisons with the sport’s elite.
The son of Dubawi, and a full brother to world champion Rebel’s Romance, produced what Racelab analyst Matt Collum described as the most impressive debut performance in the database, which dates back to 2011.

“I haven’t seen a debut win like this,” Collum said.
“It’s the highest-rated debut in our database, which goes back to 2011.”
Even more remarkably, Collum believes Fortitudine has already shown enough ability to be competitive well above maiden grade.
“Yes, definitely good enough to win a Listed race next up,” he said.
“His base-adjusted rating would be 103 easily next start.”
And while the performance itself was extraordinary, Collum believes the colt is only scratching the surface.
“He would only improve over more ground and with race experience as well.”
“Hard not to see him winning a Group 1 in the future.”
Those lofty comments came after Fortitudine demolished his rivals over 1m3f at Kempton, cruising to victory by 21 lengths in a performance that backed up the visual impression with outstanding sectionals and overall time.
According to RaceIQ, Fortitudine stopped the clock in 2:19.89, almost a second quicker than standard time (-0.89sec versus par), while earning a Time Index of 6.5. For context, the meeting average was just 4.2.
The data behind the performance was equally as eye-catching.
Fortitudine recorded the quickest acceleration from 0-20mph of the meeting in 2.01 seconds, the highest top speed at 37.69mph and the fastest individual furlong of the day.
It is rare to see a horse dominate both the clock and the sectional data so comprehensively on debut, particularly over a staying trip.
Given his pedigree, there is every reason to believe the performance was no fluke.
Fortitudine is a full brother to Rebel’s Romance, one of the world’s premier middle-distance performers and a multiple Group 1 winner across Europe, Dubai and Hong Kong.
While comparisons with such an accomplished galloper are naturally ambitious after just one start, Thursday’s performance suggests Fortitudine possesses the raw talent to develop into a high-class staying colt.
If Collum’s ratings prove accurate, his maiden victory may not simply be remembered as an impressive debut.
It could ultimately be viewed as the first glimpse of racing’s next elite middle-distance star.
