The greatest day of racing on the Australian calendar, Derby Day!
Just a couple of races I want to touch on across a cracking Flemington card.
Race 7: Victoria Derby
(5) Murshurdi $15 | (9) Icy You $12
More than happy to take on the Sydney colts. They have talent, but I just feel they’re under the odds on what they’ve done so far, and I’m not convinced about them running out the trip.
I may be completely wrong, but you have to have an opinion and I’m happy with mine.
Murshurdi has improved every time he hits the track. He got a lovely run in the Geelong Classic, peeled to the outside and ran straight past the leaders. It was his first go at the trip and a career-best performance.
Like most of Maher’s runners, he looks to have been timed to the minute for this.
It was Icy You who Murshurdi went past late, but I loved the fight he showed right on the post. He looks an out-and-out stayer, Williams rides, and I think with a patient steer they can nurse him to the 300m before giving him one crack at them.
Both look terrific value at double-figure odds.
Race 9: Silver Wedding $27
The favourite Flying For Fun is going to be very hard to beat. She’s in form and has drawn to get to the right part of the track.
But I wanted to mention (14) Silver Wedding $27, who I know well from Queensland.
She’s a bloody ripper!
Very underrated, and if she’d drawn a wide gate I’d be having a decent go at her.
I’m very concerned about her draw, which could prove horrible. I’m hoping they come out, jag straight back and find the back of one of the main hopes.
She’s got a killer turn of foot when things pan out, and at $27 she’s certainly worth keeping an eye on.
