Fresh from midweek success at Randwick, trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy will unveil two of their leading Metropolitan contenders at Rosehill this Saturday. South Australian Derby winner Coco Sun and rising stayer Half Yours are both set to contest the Mounties Group Handicap (1500m) as part of their build-ups to the spring staying features.
Half Yours, a stable recruit earlier this year, has been a revelation with three wins from five starts, including a dominant 4.5-length romp in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m). That performance has seen him installed as the $7 favourite for the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) on October 4, despite drawing barrier 20 this weekend.
“He has been incredible. He’s exciting us,” Tony McEvoy told RSN. “The Caloundra Cup was impressive and the market has him favourite for the Metrop, so I’m very buoyed by that. He’ll run on Saturday, then the Kingston Town, and into the Metrop.”
Coco Sun, meanwhile, has not won since her Derby triumph but showed resilience in strong spring races last year. Drawn wide in barrier 18, she resumes with fitness to build and is considered a $26 chance for the Metropolitan.
McEvoy stressed the importance of rain-affected ground for the mare. “She’s a heavy horse and she jarred up at Eagle Farm in the Tattersall’s Tiara. I couldn’t be happier with her at home, but she has to bring it on race day,” he said.
Half?! It’s all his today!
