Autumn Glow v Sheza Alibi could be the Doncaster Dream

A blockbuster clash between unbeaten mare Autumn Glow and rising star filly Sheza Alibi might loom for the Doncaster Mile

The Doncaster could provide the clash of a wonderful filly and a great mare, or maybe it might be the tale of who’s not there next month.

Sheza Alibi put herself in Doncaster contention with a demolition of the boys in the Randwick Guineas on Saturday.

She will never get into a handicap again with 49kg, so Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman have a decision to make where the future might say no to a return to the Randwick mile.

It could be one of the great Doncasters with talk of the unbeaten Autumn Glow taking up the challenge of 56.5kg in the Doncaster.

Howver, her trainer Chris Waller hinted the preferred path could be the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

So the collision of the two stars might wait for the spring, with Coleman hinting that one Group 1 might be enough for now.

“We’ll see how she comes through this,” Coleman said. The plan always was to have a pretty light autumn because she had such a deep spring preparation.”

“So her and I will be on the road back to Melbourne tomorrow morning. We will see how she comes through it.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we put her away now and save her for the spring.”

Sheza Ailibi didn’t get any favours being planted three-wide and then forced to follow Autumn Boy, when many believed it would be the other way around.

The Saxon Warrior filly topped the Randwick rise and exploded to leave the Caulfield Guineas winner in her wake.

The margins were 3-1/4 length back to Autumn Boy and another two lengths to Spring Champion Stakes winner Attica in third.

That is significant in any race, yet alone with two Group 1 winners in the placings and places Sheza Alibi in discussions as the best three-year-old in the country and as a challenger for Autumn Glow.

“It didn’t all play out the way we wanted, but we ended up with a soft run behind the hardest to beat [Autumn Boy], dragged us everywhere we needed to be, and she grew wings at the furlong. ” said jockey Luke Nolen, who chalked up win 2000 on the star filly.

“She’s an exceptional horse.”
