Group 1 sprinter Baraqiel will head to the paddock after trainer Troy Corstens confirmed the gelding pulled up jarred following his gallant second in last Friday’s G1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.
The Bennett Racing-owned galloper loomed as a serious chance turning for home but was unable to match Charm Stone in the straight. Corstens said he noticed the Group 1 Moir Stakes winner’s action change late in the race.
“He’s actually jarred up a little after Friday night, so we’re going to give him a little break,” Corstens told racing.com.
“All scans and x-rays are good, which is the important thing, but he’s just pulled up a little bit sore. His action changed around the corner and I knew straight away something was up.”
While the setback ends any chance of Baraqiel contesting The Everest this season, Corstens said the problem was only minor and nothing like the suspensory injury that ruled him out of the 2025 autumn.
“It’s nothing serious – he’ll just be out for three or four weeks, and then we’ll be getting him ready for hopefully a big autumn,” Corstens said.
Baraqiel has won eight of his 13 starts, including last year’s G2 McEwen Stakes, the Listed Carlyon and most recently the G1 Moir Stakes.
