Frustrated punters have sometimes threatened to ‘bulldoze’ a track on social media but one may have taken things to a new level on Sunday, with the Port Augusta race meeting nearly abandoned due a bomb threat.
The meeting in outback South Australian was halted before Race 6 after police responded to a report that an explosive device had been placed in the vicinity of the track.
There was an indefinite delay to the races while police conducted a search of the area, however there was no sign of anything suspicious.
Participants indicated to stewards that they were comfortable to proceed with the last two races, which were rescheduled and run approximately 30 minutes later than originally programmed.
It’s the second time in 18 months that a bomb threat has been made at a South Australian race meeting, with last year’s Naracoorte Cup the subject of a hoax call that prompted a strong police presence and search on track.
Racing SA and the Port Augusta Racing Club were contacted for comment.
