Doomben Blackbook: Gibbo’s posts a couple to follow as Thompson lands five-fimer

A solid midweek program at Doomben on Wednesday produced a handful of strong follow runs, with Ben Thompson stealing the show riding five winners on the card. When he’s getting the right opportunities, he’s as good as any jockey in Queensland, and his form heading into the carnival is worth noting.

there were a couple of runners thatbut made a serious impression. They are both a must for your blackbook.

Race 1 Kickup Rocky

Big run at odds and arguably the one that got away on the day. Settled last in the run and was still spotting them a big start turning for home, before striking traffic at a crucial stage. By the time clear running came, the race was effectively over.

Once into the clear he let rip late and savaged the line, only just missing in a performance that screamed “next start winner”. With even luck and a slightly cleaner run, he goes straight past them. Provided they don’t place him too aggressively, he looks well placed to pick off a race or two this preparation.

Race 4 Good Banter

This was a case of class rising to the top. Positioned well enough throughout before angling to the outside in the straight, where he quickly asserted his superiority and put the race away with authority.

There’s a sense this one still has more to offer. He handled this grade comfortably and looks capable of stepping slightly higher without looking out of place. If he lands in the right race shape, particularly in a smaller Listed field where tempo and positioning suit, he’s more than capable of going on with it this campaign.

ers that didn’t win but made a serious impression. They are a must for your blackbook.
