A very good day out with some winners at Doomben and that always makes the replays easier to watch.
Could have been a super day out but 3–4 of the on top selections featured in the stewards reports with slow recoveries, lame etc. That’s racing. Onto the blackbook.
The Wheelbarrow (Race 4)
Looked the best of the day and saluted in style. The good gate was the key and he got a perfect ride from Rodd, but he was also heavily backed and the market confidence proved spot on. There was support late and he justified every cent of it.
He travelled sweetly behind the speed, never spent a penny early and when Rodd peeled out on the corner and gave him clear air, the response was immediate. His turn of foot at the 300m put the race to bed quickly.
The runner-up made it interesting late, but once he felt that pressure, The Wheelbarrow lifted again through the line. That’s a sign of a horse with a bit of engine and a bit of fight.
Importantly, he ran right through the 1350m and looked strong past the post, suggesting 1400m holds no fears. If he continues to draw to get that economical run, he can win again before the handicapper really tightens the screws.
Shredded (Race 5)
This bloke is going the right way. Eligible for easier races and still learning his craft, he travelled better than most in a race where plenty were off the bit a long way from home. That’s usually a strong indicator at Doomben when the pressure builds mid-race.
Beaten by a classy one in Fabulantes and there’s no disgrace in that. The winner had superior momentum at the right time, but Shredded kept finding the line and stuck to his task well.
He looks like a horse who will appreciate 1400m and possibly a mile once he furnishes. If they keep him in work and place him carefully in Benchmark grade, especially where he can land midfield with cover, he’s capable of picking one off at a decent price. Still upside there and not fully exposed yet.
