Geelong Cup Day market movers: Punters pile into Maher maiden as Gai backed to win Cup

Punters have had a good crack at Wednesday’s Geelong Cup Day meeting, with TAB revealing the 12 biggest market firmers across the nine-race program.

Several runners have attracted significant early support, including some at double-figure odds.

In the feature Geelong Cup (Race 7), The Euphrates has attracted support, firming from $5 into $3.40 after failing to get a run as first emergency in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup. He’s another galloper that is likely to press forward and make his own luck on speed. On the second line of betting is the Joseph O’Brien Small Fry who is looking to qualify for the Melbourne Cup with victory here.

One of the most notable moves has been for Murshidi (Race 5), who has been $11 into $4.20 ahead of the Listed Geelong Classic.

Trained by the in-form Ciaron Maher and with Blake Shinn booked to ride, Murshidi is still a maiden but has attracted plenty of interest as he looks to break through at Listed level.

Celsius Star (Race 8) has been another major firmer, shortening from $13 into $4.80. He's a galloper who is likely to settle on speed, a position that could prove advantageous if the Geelong track plays as expected.

Perhaps the most surprising opening price was the $21 offered about Mr Natural (Race 4). It's hard to fathom how the Lindsey Smith-trained galloper went up at those odds given he was backed off the map before breaking his maiden in impressive fashion, charging home from the tail of the field here at Geelong. Punters have again stepped in, with his price slashed to $8. Those with tickets at $21 are sitting pretty!

Roaring Engine (Race 1) has also attracted significant support, his price halving from $11 into $5.50.

There has been plenty of early activity around Race 2, with three runners featuring among TAB's top 12 firmers. Royal Rendezvous has shortened from $6 into $3.70, Ten Warriors from $9 into $5 and Spirit Of Wealth from $9 into $5.50.
