The Trial Files: Maiden gallopers primed for first up wins

Jump-out and trial data point to two key plays at Geelong, with debutant speed and a Maher improver headlining the card.

Race 2 – 1:55PM Rex Gorell Volkswagen Maiden Plate (1235 METRES)

#6 HOLDING CAPTIVE looks set for a big debut. He trialled very well on the Caulfield Heath track most recently, showing good speed and winning under relatively light riding. His work alongside Titahi Bay (who is a good trialler) at Cranbourne prior was also sound. Debuts in blinkers here, draws to lead and should take a stack of running down.

#5 FIVEMINUTEWARNING looks the main danger. Has been trialling with real intent for the Payne’s, showing good early speed and being given a solid test late (which isn’t the norm for the stable). Suspect he will sit outside HOLDING CAPTIVE and these two will pair off and fight out the race.

#11 MELEYS has jumped-out OK for her return to the sports and with three hit-outs under her belt won’t be wanting for fitness. Has claims.

Suggested bet:

Backing #6 HOLDING CAPTIVE. Could take the 5,6 quinella, as well.

Race 3 – 2:30PM Rosemont Stud 3YO Maiden Plate (1435 METRES)

The Maher stable can bring up a double with #5 WARREGO who resumes here off a strong Ballarat trial. Got back in that piece of work before working to, and through, the line very well. Hasn’t had much continuity of racing as yet and both starts have been over shorter trips, which doesn’t look his go. He’s going to need a little luck off gate one as he doesn’t look a ‘jump and run’ type, but he’s not favourite and I think he should be.

#3 REGAL GENT covered some ground first up but that was a fairly sedate tempo and a moderate maiden. Will strip fitter and had trialled nicely prior, but seems under the odds at ~$3. Sticky map, too.

Suggested bet:

Backing #5 WARREGO
