It’s a very open day of racing at Flemington and, while there are plenty of competitive races across the program, I’ve found just the one play.
It comes up in Race 6, where I feel the two favourites should fight out the finish. I’m siding with a lightly raced gelding who continues to improve and looks to have plenty more to offer.
Race 6 No.4 Bel Mazyaan $6/$2.30
Lightly raced gelding for Jerome Hunter who is building a nice record (8:3:1:3) and looks to have plenty of upside.
He progressed quickly last preparation, going from winning a maiden in June to finishing runner-up in Listed company just three starts later. He rounded out that campaign with a fourth over this track and trip, beaten just 2.5 lengths.
Returned at Bendigo in a BM78 and got the job done in nice style, suggesting he has come back in terrific order and is ready to build on what he achieved last preparation.
He was a winner second-up last campaign, which gives me confidence heading into this assignment. From the barrier, he should be able to find cover midfield and enjoy a nice run in transit.
He’s a horse with good upside and I suspect there’s still plenty of improvement to come. Provided Flemington is playing fairly and horses can make ground, he should get every possible chance.
At the price, he’s the one I want to be with.
Suggested bet: Bel Mazyaan each-way at $6/$2.30.
