Price warns history against Golden Slipper hero Guest House

There are a dozen Group 1 juvenile races in Australia, but one stands above all others and it’s why Guest House already has a future after the track and creates interest every time he steps on it.

The Golden Slipper winner returns in Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes, which features a quarter of the million-dollar races winners from last season as well as a couple of place getters from big money race.

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr got it right with Guest House in the race every two-year-old wants to win and got the reward from Coolmore, which now share in the ownership of the Home Affairs colt and will stand him after his racing is complete.

But it comes with attention and a 3.5 kilogram penalty for the 1100m dash

“Slipper winners either don’t run in this race or find it hard to win,” said Price, looking at Tierce as the last horse to do the Golden Slipper-San Domenico double in 1991.

“I won’t be disappointed if he gets beaten but I will be disappointed if he doesn’t run well.

“He has had a good prep for this, but his targets are the Golden Rose and The Everest we have say all along.

“In a race where there will be plenty of speed with Blue Door, he will be getting home late, and it is how close he can get to the speed horses.

”He is very good as you have seen on the big days.”

Guest House won the Golden Slipper and was an unlucky third in the Blue Diamond where he found traffic problems.

The pressure is a little less for the likes of Golden Gift winner Revengeance and BRC Sires winner Berzelius that have $1 million race success behind them.

Adrian Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said it has been a fair journey back to track for Revengeance after winning the first $1 million of the two-year-old season.

“He got some bone chips and missed the autumn and we have had to be patience,” Bott said. “We have been happy the way he has came up, but he is going to be better as they step in trip.

“It is a starting point for him, and he will be finding the line with a mind as he builds towards the Golden Rose.”
