Trainer Matthew Smith has confirmed that sprinter Headwall will not contest The Shorts at Randwick this Saturday after the gelding sustained an injury to his near hindleg following trackwork.
Smith told Racing NSW stewards that the sprinter was found to be lame on Sunday morning and will undergo further veterinary tests to determine the severity of the setback.
According to Smith, Headwall won’t be nominated for The Shorts and a decision on his spring preparation will be made in the coming days.
The setback casts doubt over the gelding’s spring carnival prospects, with his immediate future hinging on the outcome of scans and veterinary advice.
