Thoroughbred racing returns to Hobart on Sunday for a six-race card featuring a round of the National Apprentice Race Series.

The rail is at +12m with the weather forecast suggesting a warm day of 27 C.

R1 Racing Owners Club Tasmania Maiden, 1100m

LAWRENNY BOYS (2) is close to breaking through but has had no luck with barriers all preparation. UNA PALOMA BLANCA (7) loomed to win last start but didn’t see out the 1200m. Better suited back to 1100m. BLACK RAPTOR (4) was solid on debut then got too far back at Launceston. Has drawn to advantage and can improve sharply. LIGHT FORCE (1) covered too much ground in the same race. DINA TYCOON (5) had good market support at Devonport but was weak late. With the benefit of extra fitness may pay to keep her safe.

Staking Strategy: Would’ve preferred Lawrenny Boys had drawn in a touch closer but he can still can lead these and will take catching. Having a saver on Una Paloma Blanca. She’ll be doing her best work late. 2 units to win LAWRENNY BOYS (2). 1 unit to win UNA PALOMA BLANCA (7).

R2 Aviso Tas Insurance Brokers Class 4, 1600m

BENEFICIARY (1) is chasing a fourth straight win and looks well suited stepping up to 1600m for the first time. First time at Hobart is the only slight query. FIORENTE DE LEGEND (3) has been racing consistently all preparation and she excels at track and trip. GEORGARONI (4) also has solid claims. He gave Beneficiary a start at Launceston and pulled good ground off him late. NAVARRE RIVER (5) can’t be ruled out but this is tough.

Staking Strategy: Beneficiary is the obvious but stepping outside of the Launceston bubble for the first time, he doesn’t offer any value. Fiorente De Legend and Georgaroni both have genuine claims. 1 unit to FIORENTE DE LEGEND (3) and GEORGARONI (4).

R3 National Apprentice Race Series Bm60 Hcp, 1430m

BERSERKER (1) keeps racing well, beaten under a length at his past three outings, the one to beat. CAPITAL CHEVAL (2) gets the blinkers back on and has a strong third‑up record. Wide gate the slight negative. RICH CLAN (3) finished well down the track at Launceston but comes off a 30‑day freshen, draws ideally, looks a likely improver. CARNELIAN ROCK (4) doesn’t win out of turn but maps well and shouldn’t be far away. NATIVE CLAN (5) had a torrid run first up when posted wide no cover then battled on well last time behind a smart winner, should be ready now.

Staking Strategy: Rich Clan’s last run a forgive. Gets a better set up here and coming off a 30 day freshen he should be thereabouts . 1 unit to win RICH CLAN (3).

R4 Kevin Sharkie Maiden/class 1, 1600m

BLOOMING EDGE (1) is coming off a 42 day freshen and has had a change of stables. Has been consistent all of the preparation without winning, regularly finding one or two better. RIPPINGTON (2) strolled home to win his maiden at Devonport by 5 lengths and the runner up went on to win at Launceston on Friday night. The query is whether he can bring that synthetic form to Hobart. VIXEN’S MOON (8) lost all hope at the start at Launceston when she was slowly away. Previous form was good enough. She just needs to step away cleanly. SOUTH GEORGIA (6) last run when beaten 13 lengths is best ignored. She saves her best for here. LAST TREMBLE (4) disappointed last start. Not sure what to make of that effort. Chance on previous run. TIZSA NICE DROP (7) next best.

Staking Strategy: South Georgia recent form doesn’t read well on face value but back in trip and drawn to advantage she’s capable of sharp improvement. 2 units each-way SOUTH GEORGIA (6).

R5 National Apprentice Race Series Bm60 Hcp, 1200m

MATERIAL MADAM (5) has returned in good order with 2 solid placings and from barrier 1 looks awfully hard to beat. STARDARMUS (2) resumes and though only boasts a solitary first‑up win, he never runs poorly fresh. EASTCOAST MISS (3) was okay in a harder race last start and has also drawn to advantage. STREET DIVA (1) won well first up but the last couple off efforts have only been fair. ESPRIT DIVA (6) and GEEGEE STRAWBERRY (9) are hard horses to catch but capable if things fall their way.

Staking Strategy: Material Madam has returned in good order and drawn perfectly in gate one should go very close. 2 units to win MATERIAL MADAM (5).

R6 Ladbrokes Mega Multi Class 1 Hcp, 1100m

LIVE ON LOVE (1) hasn’t been seen for 313 days since wining nicely on debut. Has a couple of trials under the belt including a fastest heat win at Longford. OUTBUSH (2) has a tricky gate but comes through a good form race and won his maiden here the start prior. ARGYLL DIAMOND (3) had been consistent in similar races prior to last run. LADY FERN (9) was a forgive at Launceston over 1400m. Has a handy record at this track. ROYAL DETECTIVE (6) is a new arrival and thought he trialled okay behind Live On Love.

Staking Strategy: Live on Love maps perfectly and the one to beat but given she’s been on the sidelines for over 10 months won’t be getting too involved. 1 unit to win LIVE ON LOVE (1).
