Peter Moody and Luke Nolen made Caulfield their own for a decade, headlined by the exploits of Black Caviar. On Saturday the pair combined with another star female, the brilliant filly Sheza Alibi.
Nolen was full of admiration after her breathtaking Sandown Guineas victory and joked that he’d do anything to stay in the saddle. “I’ll be cutting legs off and arms off to maintain the ride,” he said.
Despite taking on the boys, Sheza Alibi was crunched into a $1.50 favourite in the Group 2 feature. From the inside draw Nolen parked her in the box seat and those who took the shorts had little to worry about. A gap appeared on the fence soon after straightening and the filly exploded through, surging clear to win by a widening 5.5 lengths in a dominant display.

Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman took over training Sheza Alibi from Kris Hansen this campaign. Hansen set the filly modest targets at Rockhampton and Townsville at her first three starts before tacking the Listed Tatts Stakes where she ran second to subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner, Autumn Boy.
That form reference gave Moody confidence as the spring unfolded.
“We didn’t quite know what to expect but when you saw Autumn Boy come out win the Caulfield Guineas as impressively as he did and this filly, we thought she’d come on,” said Moody.
“Kris Hansen, her previous trainer, had done a good job and thought she’d come on.”
Moody has already turned his attention to future Group 1 goals.
“I don’t think we’ll have too much trouble finding a nice race for her. She’ll be back at Flemington in the autumn in something like the Australian Guineas because outside of her old adversary like Autumn Boy you’re probably not going to hide from the rest.”
It’s fair to say Luke Nolen knows a good filly when he sees one, and he couldn’t have been more glowing in his assessment of Sheza Alibi.
“I’ve good a good association with mares. I really like her and I don’t want to put the cart before the horse but it is hard finding these nice ones.”
“She’s got an elite turn-of-foot and I think she might be an elite horse.”
