The Melbourne Racing Club has paid tribute to former chairman John Kanga by awarding him Life Membership.
Kanga rose to prominence at the club in 2024, taking control following a period of significant leadership turmoil.
During his tenure, Kanga helped secure the future of Sandown Racecourse, halted the proposed multimillion-dollar Caulfield grandstand development and drove the $195 million Mt Scopus transaction, which was designed to substantially reduce the club’s debt.
He also oversaw the recovery of the Norman Robinson Stand following the fire, reinstated the Caulfield mounting yard, and participants said he improved racing and training facilities.
His initiatives that made food and beverages more affordable for members and racegoers proved popular with punters.
He shocked the racing industry when he resigned on the eve of the 2025 Caulfield Carnival following a series of reports by The Age, despite Kanga never being accused of any wrongdoing.
Kanga said at the time his decision to step down was made to protect his family and prevent the controversy from becoming a distraction for the club during its most important time of the year, but remains a popular figure within racing, with many believing he will return to an official role within the sport in the future.
Betsy understands Kanga delivered a short acceptance speech in the club’s committee room on Saturday, where he was among a number of people recognised.
Melbourne Cricket Club president Fred Oldfield was also honoured.
Those in attendance said Kanga thanked his family and paid tribute to the proud history of the Melbourne Racing Club.
“We are simply custodians of this great club for a moment in time. Our responsibility is to respect its 150-year history, embrace its future and leave it stronger for the next generation,” he told the room.
“I know we all concur that the horses are our heroes and our members are our foundation. Thank you for this wonderful honour.”
Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Danny O’Brien also paid tribute to Kanga after winning Race 6 at Caulfield with Our Chief.
“Kanga was made a Life Member of the Melbourne Racing Club today, so he invited us along and we’re thrilled to get a winner,” O’Brien said after the race.
“No one deserves it more than John for what he has done for this club over the past few years.”
In a statement, the MRC said Kanga was one of 25 people recognised on Saturday.
“The Melbourne Racing Club awarded 25 Life Memberships yesterday, recognising individuals who have been long-time members or made significant contributions to the Club.
”Former Chairman John Kanga was one of the 25 recipients, recognised for his service to the Club, including his leadership in saving Sandown Racecourse, returning the Caulfield mounting yard to its original position in front of the Members’ Stand, and stopping plans for a proposed $250 million grandstand redevelopment at Caulfield that would have placed a crippling debt burden on the Club.
”The Club is proud to recognise all 25 recipients and thanks them for their commitment and contribution to the Melbourne Racing Club.”
