Lady of Camelot injured in freak stingray incident ending Brisbane, Ascot dream

Lady Of Camelot will miss Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 and a Royal Ascot bid is over after the star mare came off second best in a bizarre encounter with a stingray on Tuesday morning.

Co-trainer Adrian Bott reported to Queensland stewards that the G1 winner sustained wounds to her near foreleg after coming into contact with a stingray during a routine beach recovery session in the shallows.

She was attended to by a stable veterinarian before being sent to a specialist clinic. In a statement released online, the mare’s ownership group, Go Bloodstock, said Lady Of Camelot’s racing career will now come under consideration.

“She has been transported to a specialist veterinary hospital where she remains under close observation,” the statement said.

“While the immediate focus is on her recovery and well-being, the decision has been made to end her Brisbane Winter Carnival and international campaigns effective immediately.”

“A decision regarding her future will be made in due course.”

“Given her elite pedigree and Group 1 success, she remains a highly valuable prospect.”

Lady Of Camelot finished midfield first-up on a heavy track in the G2 Victory Stakes and was rated $17 with Bet365 in the Doomben 10,000.

The mare’s scratching will see first emergency Beadman ($13 with Bet365) gain a start in the Doomben 10,000, with second emergency and second favourite Napoleonic ($4) one step closer to getting a run.
