Dean Watling has been keeping a close eye on the NSW trials, with a handful of runners putting their hands up as horses to follow over the coming weeks.
From promising youngsters building towards their debuts to established gallopers tuning up for their spring campaigns, Deano has identified six horses worth adding to the blackbook from recent trials at Warwick Farm, Rosehill and Randwick.
Lux | Chris Waller (James McDonald) | Warwick Farm H8 795m | September 3
$47k yearling, half to Enviable. Quiet first trial when showing smart tactical speed. Second trial was snagged back to last before this 3YO grey filly worked exceptionally well through the line.
Bauhinia | Lee & Cherie Curtis (Jason Collett) | Warwick Farm H5 795m | September 3
This quality mare didn’t come up last prep and had some issues, no doubt. Go back two preps and she was only beaten 1.4L and 0.36L in an Invitation and Hot Danish. Lovely first trial back off a 19-week spell, hummed home down the outside and was in front 200m after the post. Look for a second trial before she returns.
Crescent King | Peter Snowden (James McDonald) | Rosehill H7 1030m | September 8
Smart first trial before an even better second trial here by Crescent King. Lovely strong action with a big stride, James was in the saddle here too and the overall time was slick. Ready to go to the races now.
You’re Not The King | Bjorn Baker (Rachel King) | Rosehill H8 900m | September 8
Interesting new addition to the Baker stable, ex Mark Currie and ex Billy Healey. Has shown a lot of talent on a couple of occasions, lovely first trial down here and can find his best under the care of Baker. Look for a second trial now.
Pin Up Sheila | O’Shea & Charlton (Zac Lloyd) | Randwick H3 1050m | September 11
2/2 unbeaten filly who we are yet to see at the races this Spring. She has shown very sharp talent already but cemented that with back-to-back smart trials. The first behind Laksa and Crescent King and the latest behind Global Goal. She looked as good, if not better, than those horses in both too. Ready for the races now.
Caballus | Bjorn Baker (Tommy Berry) | Randwick H11 740m | September 11
Cracking return trial after knocking off a Newmarket and running 6th in the Quokka last prep. He was alongside stablemate Overpass and looks to be going much better. Love how bright and eager he was in his return trial this prep.
