One of the biggest race days on the calendar, Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill alongside William Reid Stakes Day at Caulfield, and it shaped as the perfect storm for bookmakers. Short-priced favourites dominated the landscape, punters were confident, and the multis started stacking early.
“The day looked set to feature many short-priced favourites, which is certainly what the punters thought,” said Ponybet’s Anthony Jupp.
Early damage sets the tone
Punters struck early at Caulfield with the well backed favourite taking out the opener.
“We really liked Ka Ying Cheer, so we nursed him and got a decent result… only minus $5k.”
At the same time, there were near misses brewing elsewhere. A result at Trentham could easily have tipped things the wrong way early.
“We then had to dodge a bullet over at Trentham in Race 5 where one punter had $1k on The Weapon at $13.”
Multis start to snowball
But the bigger concern was not individual bets. It was the accumulation. Punters were latching onto the shorties and building serious multi exposure as the afternoon wore on.
“Plenty of big multi action was rolling in… one optimist was trying to turn $10 into $280K!”
And when that kind of optimism is in the air, bookies know what is coming. The pressure builds slowly, then all at once.
The global sweat
The most nervous moment of the day did not even come from the races. Instead, it came via a global double that had everyone watching sports they would not normally give a second thought.
“A punter had a double, under 7.5 runs in the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks vs Hiroshima Toyo Carp into under 49.5 points in the Knights vs Warriors, just under $5k to win $10.5k.”
It all hinged on a Japanese baseball total, never where you want to be as a bookmaker.
“The mighty Hiroshima Carp scored 7 runs to win by 2 and scupper the multi, bless them!”
Favourites keep landing
Back on home soil, the pattern remained consistent. The favourites kept lobbing, and while there were not many massive straight bets landing, the multi liability was quietly ballooning with every result.
“The favourites kept rolling into the winner’s stall… no huge single bets but the multi liability was building.”
That is the danger zone. Nothing is going catastrophically wrong, but everything is adding up.
Key results turn the tide
The turning point came with a couple of key results falling the right way, taking the edge off what could have been a very long afternoon.
“Getting Jimmystarr and Planet Red beaten put us in decent shape for the day considering the results.”
Even the Golden Slipper, often a graveyard for bookmakers, landed in their favour.
“Guest House was a terrific winner of the Slipper, which was a small result for us.”
There were still hits to absorb. Angel Ladder in Brisbane stung, but the broader picture began to stabilise as results evened out across the country.
“What we lost in Brisbane, Angel Ladder a nasty result, we won back at Morphettville, and the rest of the out-wide meetings were very kind for a change.”
By the time the metro cards wrapped up, punters were still searching for one last play to either get square or build on the winnings, but even that did not eventuate.
“A couple of the bigger punters had found a dog in Race 9 at Dubbo but sadly the race was abandoned.”
A result that shouldn’t have been
And after a day that looked, on paper, like it should have gone heavily the punters’ way, Ponybet somehow found themselves ahead.
“On a day where the results looked to run straight we managed to get our noses in front… something!”
Not by much. But on a Saturday like that, it does not need to be.
