A new rule in NSW that limits international riders to metropolitan meetings has been criticised by leading trainer Annabel Archibald.

Archibald has a UK apprentice riding for her operation for two months.

Jack Callan, the son of Irish jockey Neil Callan, is considered a rising star of the UK ranks.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a new rule in NSW now blocks international jockeys from riding in country meetings for a period of time. The rule, which has the backing of the NSW Jockey’s Association, was brought in to protect the opportunities of local riders.

“He’s very talented and he’s not treated all that well here,” Archibald told the Herald.

“He’s had a few wins on the premier tracks [at home], but it’s not like his 50 winners would be the equivalent of his metro winners here. He should really still be with a country claim [3kg], so to be riding winners with only 1.5kg, with his lack of experience, it’s a credit to him.”

“I know a couple of good judges back home are tipping him as champion apprentice in the UK this coming season, and he’s got the work ethic to head that way.

Callan said the rule had limited his initial opportunities.

“It’s made it a bit more difficult to get going, but I’ve still got plenty out of it,” Callan said of the restriction.

“Luckily, I’ve still been able to get support, and Annabel and Rob have been very good to me.”

A Racing NSW spokesman said the rule allows each rider to be assessed on an individual basis and can be altered once a rider decides to remain in NSW.
