One-time Coolmore Stud Stakes favourite Rosberg has been given the ultimate chance to become a racehorse as a gelding.
The son of Deep Field created a huge impression winning the McKenzie Stakes last spring, but he has failed to run in a place in three starts since.
It has left his ownership exasperated, and they decided to cut him after he finished last in the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes at Morphettville on ANZAC Day.
Rosberg is entered as a gelding at Caulfield on Saturday, but a wet track would see him put away for the spring.
“Everyone who has ridden him thinks he is a Group 1 horse, and we thought he would win a Coolmore to tell you the truth,” owner Shane McGrath said.
“We have tried everything to get him to show it on race day, and this was the final thing we had left.”
“We had the blinkers on him in Adelaide and thought he would just go there and win, so that was it.”
“We decided to geld him and make him into a racehorse.”
“Hopefully, he can deliver on the talent we know he has.”
“He is very fit, so we put him in at Caulfield on the weekend, but if the track is heavy, he won’t be running and we’ll wait for the spring with him.”
