Guest House wins the Golden Slipper [Bradley Photos]

Dean Watling on the San Domenico Stakes – The Golden Slipper curse is a myth?

The Golden Slipper curse will be put to the test in Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes, but Dean Watling believes Guest House can buck the trend and has found a bet at $5.

Track pattern – Rail +3m entire

Expecting a Good 4–Soft 5 track here. The rail is in the +3m, which suggests the track should play very evenly overall, with a slight advantage to horses landing off the rails and getting to lanes 2–6 in the straight.

Speed map

Solid enough speed expected up front here over the 1100m. It’s key to note the chute start, as it can be very tricky for horses drawn out wide or horses getting a long way back to be successful in these contests. I expect the race-fit Blue Door to lead, with either Music Time or Revengeance occupying the position outside or on the back of her. This leaves the door open for the one-one and one-out-one-back.

Guest House has the speed to roll across and find the one-one, with Half Pipe and Berzelius both shoved to the rails. Warwoven will likely take his medicine and settle at the rear.

Golden Slipper stat – First-up record as a 3YO

Looking at the past 20 Golden Slipper winners (2006–2025), 18 returned to race as three-year-olds and only five won first-up, a strike rate of 27.8%. Those five were Miss Finland (2006), Sepoy (2011), Pierro (2012), She Will Reign (2017) and Marhoona (2025). Marhoona was the first Slipper winner since She Will Reign to win first-up as a three-year-old.

Key chances

Guest House – No doubt the Golden Slipper curse conversation will be had plenty of times between now and Saturday, but as we know, these are year-by-year cases and in racing, horses run on grass, not paper. Guest House may have been an upset Slipper winner, but he wasn’t fully furnished and was in no way an “out-and-out 2YO”. I’ve loved his attitude in his trials this preparation. Physically, he’s furnished into a beast, and the biggest tick of all on Saturday is his map. He should find the one-one or a pair further back at worst. From there, it’s his race to lose.

Blue Door – She was $4.20 all-in before it was confirmed she was heading this way. No doubt the obvious danger, but at $2.15 I think the market has now overcorrected. She comes through a very high-rating Rosebud, the highest since In The Congo and Paulele ran 1-2, and she gets a lovely setup on speed again. She did set a solid tempo fresh off just one trial, though, and now has to back that up two weeks later. I respect her enormously, but at the current prices, Guest House looks the better betting proposition.

Warwoven – He had his fair share of issues as a 2YO and I doubt we ever saw his best. He has furnished beautifully as a three-year-old and looks to be going super at the trials. You could argue in his latest he was doing better than Guest House. The knock is the map though.

Wild Atlantic – The X-factor, an unraced colt taking on the G2 San Domenico on debut. He has been a trial star for back-to-back campaigns now. I love the two trials leading into this and his map. We’ll see how good he is on Saturday.

Verdict

Guest House – WIN

At $5.00, Guest House has to be a bet. I don’t buy into this “Golden Slipper curse”. Each year and each winner is a different conversation. Guest House wasn’t an out-and-out 2YO and looks to have come back even better at three. Smart trials, a physical beast who maps a treat on return.
