Shaun Beirne is heading to Rosehill for this week’s edition of Take Us On, with a short-priced favourite in the Golden Pendant in his sights before taking a different approach to the Group 1 Golden Rose.
Beirne believes the heavily backed Lazzura is under the odds in Race 7, while he is happy enough with Golden Slipper winner Guest House at the top of the Golden Rose market and instead wants to oppose two of his key rivals.
Rosehill Race 7 – Lazzura
Lazzura heads the market for the Golden Pendant after returning with a third behind Savvy Hallie and Gangsta Granny in the Sheraco Stakes. She steps to 1400m on Saturday, a distance at which she was runner-up to Beiwacht in the All Aged Stakes during the autumn.
Despite those credentials, Beirne believes the market has gone too far.
“I think Lazzura is simply too short against this field,” Beirne said.
“Her peak rating is actually below Gangsta Granny’s. Lazzura does have the stronger bank of ratings overall, which explains why she deserves to be favourite, but the magnitude of the difference in their prices is too great.
“Surfin’ Bird and Modella are also value in the race. Lazzura can absolutely win, but at the current price I’m happy to take her on and I expect her to drift.”

Rosehill Race 8 – Golden Rose
Rather than taking on Golden Rose favourite Guest House, Beirne is looking immediately below him in the market.
Guest House heads into the Group 1 second-up after winning the San Domenico Stakes in track-record time, while Warwoven subsequently won the Run To The Rose from St Gotthard.
“Rather than take on Guest House, I’m looking to lay the next two in the betting, Warwoven and St Gotthard,” Beirne said.
“Guest House carries a ratings edge of just over a length on this field. He won first-up and returned the same rating he produced when winning the Golden Slipper, which is a tremendous springboard to launch from.
“I think Tron Bolt is the other runner offering some value in the race.”
Tron Bolt finished seventh in the Run To The Rose but was closing hard. He seps out to 1400m on Saturday, having already won the Group 1 JJ Atkins over 1600m during the winter.
For Beirne, the prices around Warwoven and St Gotthard are the ones to attack rather than trying to find a reason to oppose the favourite.
