South Australian racing has recorded a monster wagering result on the back of its Group 1 racing at Morphettville on Saturday.
Wagering data across the meeting – which included the Australasian Oaks and Robert Sangster Stakes – was up an impressive 18% year-on-year.
Such a result makes it the highest turnover meeting in South Australia in recent history, Betsy is told.
The strong result was helped with an increase in starter numbers, which were up 8% year-on-year, not to mention the presence of a number of top-line jockeys from Melbourne and Sydney who competed on the day and help wagering, including James McDonald, Jamie Melham and Mark Zahra.
McDonald won his first South Australian Group 1 in the Oaks with champion trainer Chris Waller, who enjoyed his first Morphettville race day.
Crowds were up significantly too, the club said, with an increase of more than 15%.
“To have the World’s Best Jockey – James McDonald – win his first race in South Australia on the opening day of the Sportsbet Adelaide Racing Carnival at Morphettville was fantastic to see,’’ Morphettville CEO Grant Mayer said.
“To get the best horses, best trainers, and the best jockeys shows how elite the Sportsbet Adelaide Racing Carnival is.”
“We have two more exciting days still to come, starting with the Thomas Farms SA Derby this Saturday, followed by Morphettville’s grand final, Sportsbet Goodwood Day on May 9.”
