It won’t just be eastern state raiders chasing the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes later this month, with top Perth mare Super Smink set to begin her trek to Adelaide on Tuesday night.
Trainer Dan Morton confirmed that his multiple Stakes winner will fly to Melbourne before embarking on an eight-hour truck drive to Morphettville ahead of Saturday’s G3 R.N. Irwin Stakes.
Jacob Opperman has been booked to ride the daughter of Super One and Morton said the young jockey is in the mix to partner her in the Sangster.
A Stakes winner at two, three, four and five, Super Smink was placed in the 2024 G1 Railway Stakes and Morton said he identified Adelaide as a suitable location for another Group 1 bid.
As well as the Sangster, the G1 Goodwood over the same track and distance a fortnight later is also an option for Super Smink.
“She’s on a plane out of Perth tonight,” Morton said.
“She’s shown that she’s very capable at the top level and a race like the Sangster where she’s just up against those fillies and mares looks the ideal chance for her to win that Group 1.”
“We’ve been targeting Adelaide for a fair while, she’s done well towards this and trialed up nicely so we’re keen to have a go.”
“We use the e-trakka a lot to collect all the data from their gallops and trials and hers is telling us that she’s going as well, if not better, than she has previously.”
With a 104 rating, Super Smink is the highest rated horse in the Irwin Stakes entries, which also includes G1 performers Stretan Angel and Gallant Son.
