From high-rolling confidence plays to small-stake miracles, punters found plenty of ways to get the better of TAB across a busy week of racing.
The biggest collect came at Geelong on Thursday (Race 2), where one TAB customer stepped out with a staggering $50,000 on Bold Secret at $2.40.
The heavily-backed favourite justified the support, returning $120,000 and producing the largest individual collect of the week.
While the Geelong punter was happy to truckload a favourite, another customer was happy to take a very different path at Flemington on Saturday.
They invested $1,000 on Ghetto Superstar at $41 in Race 7 and were rewarded in spectacular fashion when the roughie saluted. It’s not often you see a last-start Flemington winner go around at $41 its very next start!
Finding a winner at those odds is difficult enough. Doing it with four figures on the line created one of the standout betting moments of the week and one of TAB’s more painful results.
One of the sharpest plays came via a simple two-leg multi that linked a pair of feature race winners.
A punter combined Moby Dick at $17 (Race 9 Flemington) with Queensland Oaks winner Fireball Miss at $8.50. With both runners getting the job done, the $100 investment ballooned into a $14,500 collect.
The week also featured a pair of memorable multis that turned modest stakes into decent coin.
The first came from a punter who clearly had a strong read on Saturday’s Gold Coast program. They linked Notabadjackup ($4.60, Race 2), Scud ($5.50, Race 4) and Hey Daisy ($5.00, Race 5) across three races, turning $100 into $11,650 at odds of $116.50.
The second showed just how powerful a well-placed multi can be.
With only $10 on the line, one customer stitched together four winners across Wednesday racing at Caulfield Heath, Warwick Farm and Doomben. Didn’t Miss Many ($5.50) at Caulfield Heath, Le Troisir ($6.00) at Warwick Farm, Addition ($5.50) at Doomben and Lauberhorn ($3.70) at Caulfield Heath combined to produce odds of $671.55 and a collect of $6,715.
It was the sort of ticket most punters throw on without expecting too much. By the end of the day it had turned a cheap take-away meal into a Queensland holiday.
Looking back across the biggest results, there was a little bit of everything.
For TAB traders, it was a week that showcased every type of punter. For those fortunate enough to land one of these bets, it was a reminder that whether you’re staking $50,000 or $10, one good opinion can still produce a memorable payday.
