Beiwacht breaks track record in dominant Rose win

Godolphin celebrated an incredible ninth Golden Rose victory when Beiwacht produced a breathtaking front-running performance to claim the Group 1 three-year-old feature.

The colt stopped the clock in a blistering 1:20.79, smashing the track record by 0.43 seconds.

Ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, the colt bounced straight to the front, leaving his rivals for dead at the top of the straight, winning by 4 lengths.

Wodeton never looked a winning chance, but he worked home into second.

Punters had expected Godolphin to win the race, but it was the filly Tempted who was sent off a well-backed favourite. She had a reasonable run in the race, but was no match for Beiwacht.

Marhoona returns in style

Golden Slipper winner Marhoona has returned in style, claiming the Heritage Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Michael Freedman-trained filly was well backed throughout betting, firming from $3.50 into $2.90. Settling in a perfect spot just off the speed set by boom colt Beadman, jockey Tommy Berry angled her into the clear at the top of the straight. Marhoona dug in late to fend off a strong challenge from Akaysha, proving too tough at the finish.

Now the winner of three of her four career starts, Marhoona’s only blemish came when runner-up to Tempted.

Guru Warrior lands plunge

Savvy punters were rewarded at Morphettville Parks when Guru Warrior justified a big betting move in race six.

Those first to market snapped as much as $13, with the gelding crunched into favouritism by the time the gates opened.

Backed with confidence throughout the day, Guru Warrior gave supporters little cause for concern, travelling sweetly in the run before asserting his authority in the straight to win convincingly.

King Zephyr atones for first-up flop

King Zephyr went from foe to friend of the punter in just one start.

The Grahame Begg-trained gelding was heavily backed when resuming at The Valley three weeks ago, but struggled to handle both the tight Valley circuit and the sharp 1200m tempo.

Punters were forgiving, though, stepping in again at Sandown Hillside – a far more suitable, spacious track for the big-striding galloper.

After conceding a few lengths early, King Zephyr quickly gathered momentum in the straight, sweeping past the leaders for a comfortable victory. He’s now unbeaten in three starts at Sandown.
