Top jockey Tim Clark celebrated his 40th birthday in style when Carbonados gave him a winning treble at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Clark was able to extricate Carbonados out of a tight pocket early in the straight and the sprinter accelerated through to win the NSW Jockeys Association Handicap (1300m).
Carbonados was the third of Clark’s three winners after his earlier successes on Funshow and Steel Strike.
Clark’s three winners was the perfect birthday present to start the new racing season and sent him to the top of the Sydney jockeys premiership.
But even Clark admitted it wasn’t all plain sailing as Carbonados was held up behind leaders Aberlour and Gatsby’s.
“Carbonados travelled up well,” Clark said.
“But then coming into the straight I had to figure out how well the horse (Gatsby’s) was going outside the leader.
It looked like the leader was going better so I was happy to stay where I was.
“I had the horse to make a run when the slightest of gaps appeared and he was able to push his way through and won well.”

Carbonados ($15), part-owned by Rupert Legh of Chautauqua fame, burst through the gap and dashed clear to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths from the fast finishing Althoff ($9.50) with Fire Star ($4.60 favourite) a close third.
It was quite the turnaround in form for Carbonados who had beaten only one horse to the finish in his three previous starts.
“Carbonados has been a little hit and miss and hard to catch but the switching of states, changing things up for him worked well,” Clark added.
Trained at Flemington by Ben, Will and JD Hayes, Carbonados improved his race record to seven wins from 22 starts and took his career earnings to nearly $400,000.
The Hayes brothers sent two horses up the Hume Highway to Rosehill and came away with a double after Run Harry Run scored in the previous race.
It’s a very different looking Sydney trainers premiership with Team Hayes sharing the top spot with the father and son team of Richard and Will Freedman who had winners with Attractiveness and Horizons.
Sydney’s reigning premier trainer Chris Waller drew a rare Saturday blank at his home track to begin his quest for a 17thsuccessive premiership.
