Four winners and millions in prizemoney, but Tommy Berry wants more

Tommy Berry has enjoyed a lucrative spring and a Rosehill four-timer, but a missing Group 1 win is driving him towards another big payday in The Hunter.

Tommy Berry has celebrated a slew of feature race wins during the spring carnival, not to mention a four-timer at Rosehill on Saturday, but it still hasn’t been quite enough to satisfy his lofty personal standards.

Included among his haul have been the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m) on Apocalyptic, $1 million Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) on Declichy Boulevard, $2 million The Invitation (1400m) on Lazzura, and Saturday’s Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) on the same mare.

However, Berry sees one glaring omission from his spring CV, and it’s pushing him to keep working hard into the summer.

“I’m happy enough, but it would have been nice to have a Group One there as well, so that has been a bit frustrating,” Berry said.

“It has still been a very good carnival, but we can always be a bit better and improve.

“Consistency is a key thing, so we’ve got to keep our finger on the pulse.

“I’m never content.”

Berry has ridden 24 metropolitan winners this season – four of them on Saturday aboard Probability Theory, Lazzura, Agatha and Horseshoe Hill – to move him into third place on the Sydney jockey’s premiership.

While he won’t be adding to his Group 1 tally this weekend, he is hoping to pick off another lucrative feature after securing the ride on the Bjorn Baker-trained Disneck in the $1 million The Hunter (1300m).

The gelding has turned in eye-catching performances at his past two starts, closing for sixth behind Grafterburners in the Sydney Stakes (1200m) and then coming from last in a 19-horse field to fill the same position in Ndola’s Rising Fast Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Berry will partner him for the first time at Newcastle in what he’s predicting will be an open edition of The Hunter.

“He’s going well, and I’m not sure how strong it’s going to be, The Hunter, this year,” Berry said.

“I’ve never sat on him… but Bjorn has always thrown me a bone here and there and we usually have a bit of luck.”

Berry and Baker combined to win the final race at Rosehill on Saturday with Horseshoe Hill.
