The Victoria Racing Club has revealed its chairman, Neil Wilson, is retiring.
The surprise move sees industry figure Vin Cox take control of the club – as long as he’s elected in December.
The club, in a statement, said ‘’following a comprehensive succession’’ process Cox will take over on December 15 at the club’s AGM. Cox is one of four board members up for election, having joined the board in 2020.
Wilson has been with the VRC for 14 years and has served as both chairman and CEO, the only person to have done so.
According to a club statement, Wilson ‘’has shaped the Club’s strategic direction and driven its long-term growth’’ and has ‘’championed ongoing investment in Flemington and the Melbourne Cup Carnival, positioning the Club for future success’’.
Wilson thanked members and those within racing on Thursday.
“It has been a privilege to serve the Victoria Racing Club for the past 14 years, including as CEO and Chairman over the past decade,’’ he said.
‘’I will be forever grateful to those at the VRC who have supported me and had the conviction to believe in our direction at times when it mattered most. This is a very special organisation, and it is important to preserve the VRC’s unique blend of history and tradition while embracing opportunity and progress.
‘’While my role with the Club will come to an end, I will always be a proud VRC member. My passion for the VRC, the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and everything the Club represents will remain unchanged. I look forward to seeing the Club continue to thrive and build on its proud legacy for generations to come.’’
Cox said he was ‘’ deeply honoured to be appointed Chairman of the Victoria Racing Club’’.
‘’As a member of the Club for more than 30 years, this is a responsibility that I don’t take lightly, and it is a privilege to help lead an organisation that means so much to so many people,’’ he said.
‘’Neil leaves an extraordinary legacy. His leadership has helped guide the Club and now position it for long-term success. I thank him for his commitment and contribution over 14 years of service to the VRC.’’
