Fatbet is the only bookie currently offering futures markets on the key jumps and flat features at the Warrnambool May Carnival, and that feels fitting.
A new Australian-owned bookmaker with a genuine passion for jumps racing, Fatbet is leaning right into the famous three-day Carnival and giving punters an early chance to take a position before the market fully forms.
Betsy’s Mitch Lewis has gone through the early Fatbet markets for the Galleywood Hurdle, Wangoom Handicap, Grand Annual and Warrnambool Cup, picking out the runners he believes have been missed by the early prices.
Galleywood Hurdle
Highland Blaze looks the early pick here. He won four races over the jumps last season, culminating in the Grand National Hurdle, and clearly brings the strongest profile into this. At $4.40, he presents as good value.
Enchanted Elle also looks over the odds at $7. She progressed nicely last season, winning the JJ Houlahan at Ballarat on a Heavy 8, and should press forward and try to lead throughout. She has race fitness on her side from recent runs and may be the overs in the race.
Suggested Bet: Highland Blaze win. Enchanted Elle each way.
Wangoom Handicap
Oliveanotherday looks a touch short in the early market. He has been winning well and the month between runs looks ideal, but there are still some queries around him on a wet track.
The early play is La Fracas at $5. He comes through the obvious form race, the Listed Hareeba Stakes, where he was nabbed late right on the line. He also had strong first-up form behind Flying For Fun, which ties in with Group 1 form, and now gets to her fourth run of the campaign. Add in his love of heavy ground and he looks a great early bet.
Suggested Bet: La Fracas win.
Grand Annual
Duke Of Bedford looks the horse to beat again. The key will be how he comes through Tuesday’s assignment against Stern Idol, but if he pulls up well, his recent trials and flat racing suggest he is right on target. Even with 68kg, he looks very hard to stop.
Count Zero is the each-way value at $13. The old boy defied plenty of punters when winning first-up over the jumps, with many having him pegged as more of a genuine 4000-metre-plus horse these days. But he showed there is still spring in his step. He is fitter from recent racing, has trialled nicely, and you know he will run the trip right out.
Suggested Bet: Count Zero each way.
Warrnambool Cup
Alder didn’t have an easy time of it in the Terang Cup but fought hard and was charging through the line on sticky ground. At $5.50, he looks over the odds early for a horse who should still have improvement to come out to 2350m.
Khor is worth something each way at $21. He has the obvious Alder form and was only outgunned late. He has been building nicely towards this, and if Warrnambool again gets wet ground with an on-pace advantage, he could be the each-way value in the race.
Suggested Bet: Alder win. Khor each way.
