Yorkshire set to launch Group 1 campaign in The Hunter for O’Shea and Charlton

In its brief history, The Hunter has proven a launching pad for Group 1 careers of its winners.

The six winners have gone on to compete at the highest level with some success, although last year’s victor, Briasa, remains the only Group 1 winner.

It’s why John O’Shea and Tom Charlton have chosen it as the starting point of Yorkshire’s summer campaign, which will target The Ingham and the direct entry into the Doncaster this summer.

While The Hunter field is made up of horses around the 100 benchmark, it is full of types that have reached their mark making a good testing ground for the progressive horse.

“Yorkshire is a 97 horse, but he will not finish at that rating,” O’Shea said. “We made sure he got there at the end of his last preparation for a race like this.”

“It has been a good race for a horse like him. He will get in with a good weight.”

O’Shea won The Hunter with Lost And Running in 2021, which went on to win a Premiere Stakes and become one of The Everest favourites before being a raceday scratching in the next couple of years.

“He would have won a Group 1 but didn’t get the chance,” O’Shea said.

“He was very good at Newcastle, and it’s kind of race that suits horses that get near the speed, which is ideal for Yorkshire.”

“You can even sit out, if you’re good enough, but you need to be near the speed.”

The six winners of The Hunter have been able to step up. Inaugural winner Savatiano, the dam of Attica, won the Canterbury Stakes but lost it because of a positive swab.

Sweet Deal and Vilana were Group 1 placed, while Briasa won the TJ Smith on his way to becoming one of the best sprinters in the land this year.

“You need that horse on the way up, and I think we have it in Yorkshire,” O’Shea said. “Zac [Lloyd] has been very happy with him and will ride.”

It will be the start of the third campaign for Yorkshire, and for the third time he will begin over the 1300m trip. He won a maiden and was touched off by Hunter rival Accredited at the start of his last campaign, but he will meet him on better terms on the weekend.

Accredited is one of four runners for the flying Joe Pride stable, including Coal Crusher, Golden Mile and last start winner Estadio Mestalla.
