The Basics

The beauty of this Punting Form mail is that it is not just tipping horses, it is trying to explain why they appeal through map, lane data, benchmarks and pricing.

For more casual punters, the simplest way to use it is this:

  • Respect horses drawn to get the right part of the track, especially at Rosehill.
  • Take note when Punting Form has a horse priced significantly shorter than the market.
  • Do not be afraid to follow strong rider and stable combinations when the profile already fits.

Punting Form’s weekend mail comes packed with angles, ratings and market moves ahead of a huge Saturday, but for plenty of punters the challenge is working out what actually matters.

So here’s how it shapes up.

The big takeouts this week centre around track patterns at Rosehill and Flemington, a strong push for the Tom Marquand and William Haggas pairing with Dubai Honour in the Tancred Stakes, and a cluster of runners flagged as over the odds off Punting Form’s AI ratings, benchmarks and map data.

We’ve broken it down into the key betting angles, the horses they’re keen on, and a few longer-priced plays worth a look.

The key betting angles in plain English

There were three major themes in this week’s Punting Form email.

1. Rosehill and Flemington are playing differently
At Rosehill, the inside looks a major advantage, particularly from the 400m to the winning post. Horses sticking close to the rail are getting every chance, while those making runs out in the wider lanes are up against it.

Flemington looks more forgiving, but not completely even. Punting Form’s lane data suggests the sweet spot is a few lanes off the inside, with lanes three to seven producing the best results.

2. Tom Marquand’s Rosehill record matters
Whenever Marquand comes to Sydney, punters notice. Punting Form highlighted his strong overall figures and especially his Rosehill record, which only strengthens confidence around Dubai Honour in the Tancred Stakes.

3. There are a few runners the market may have underrated
Across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide, the email identified several horses rated shorter by Punting Form’s model than the current market. That does not mean they all win, but it does point to where the perceived value sits.

Track pattern snapshot

Track What the data says What it means for punters
Rosehill Lane 1 is a major advantage. Wider lanes, especially 8 and beyond, are much harder to win from. Upgrade horses likely to save ground. Be cautious with runners expected to peel very wide in the straight.
Flemington Best ground appears to be lanes 3 to 7, creating a more balanced pattern. Look for runners who can get to the middle lanes at the right time rather than hugging the fence or getting too far out.

Rider and stable combo to note

Combination Why it matters Saturday runner
Tom Marquand + William Haggas Punting Form highlighted Marquand’s strong overall record and especially his Rosehill performance. Dubai Honour in Rosehill Race 8, the Tancred Stakes
Jye McNeil Punting Form noted he has been beating the market comfortably in recent rides. Legacy Bound at Flemington

Around the Grounds

Flemington

Race 6 – Legacy Bound
He has already been backed early and the profile stacks up. We loved the late sectionals last start, have him clearly on top via the AI model, and Jye McNeil is riding in great form. He profiles as one of the more obvious plays on the Melbourne card.

Race 7 – Whisky On The Hill
This is a classic ratings-versus-market setup. We’ve got him priced shorter than the early market and his soft-track and distance profile ticks the right boxes. If you trust the model, this is one of the cleaner value plays on the day.

Race 8 – Australian Cup
We’ve got Tom Kitten on top, but the more interesting angle is looking for an upset. Apulia and Sabaj are both double-figure runners we think can surprise. That said, it’s not a race we’re keen to bet heavily into given the strength at the top of the market.

Race 10 – Taken
He’s already been found in the market, but for good reason. We have him on top across multiple ratings measures and expect conditions to suit. Looks a solid inclusion for multiples and exotics.

Rosehill

Race 3 – Plagiarism
The map is key here. We expect him to roll forward, control the race and prove hard to run down. The early market agrees, with support coming quickly.

Race 5 – Shangri La Boy
This is more of a trust play. He has the ratings profile and speed figures we look for, and we think the market is giving you a fair price. If you’re happy to forgive the last run, there’s a case to be made.

Race 8 – Dubai Honour
This is our clearest push in Sydney. The Marquand-Haggas combination, his class, and a profile that says he can perform fresh all point to him being very hard to beat in the Tancred at the current quote.

Doomben

Race 3 – Boom Shot
One of our stronger opinions of the day. We simply think the early price is wrong. The ratings setup is near perfect, and while there are some map queries, we’re very happy to be with him at the quote.

Race 4 – Bundella
More straightforward. Strong stable, ideal map, and a horse that ticks all the key boxes for us. Not a huge price, but clearly one we respect.

Morphettville

Race 6 – Declared
Simple profile here. His best is better than this field. He had excuses last start and has already attracted early support. Looks well placed.

Race 7 – Talisay
This was the overs play and punters have already found it. Even after the price move, we still think there’s value there based on the ratings.

Race 9 – Mating Call
A strong ratings horse and one of the better Adelaide plays in the database. Benchmark figures and overall score make this a clear inclusion.

Best of those in the market

Track Race Horse Why it appeals
Flemington R6 Legacy Bound Fast late figures last start, strong AI push, jockey in form
Flemington R7 Whisky On The Hill Rated shorter than market, strong at trip and on soft ground
Rosehill R8 Dubai Honour Elite rider and stable combo, class horse, conditions suit
Doomben R3 Boom Shot Big price relative to ratings, very strong statistical profile
Morphettville R7 Talisay Strong ratings lead, backed in early, still seen as overs

Longer-priced plays

If you prefer something at value rather than taking short odds, these are the best at odds across Australia.

Track Race Horse Quoted price
Flemington R1 Pop Award $13
Flemington R5 Make It Sweet $20
Rosehill R1 Broadway Bouncer $23
Rosehill R4 Wonder Boy $26
Rosehill R6 Celestial Award $126
Rosehill R10 La Fracas $19
Ascot R7 Black For Cash $14
