Oaks not her go: O’Brien eyes mile switch for filly

Danny O’Brien will keep Getta Good Feeling to a mile and shorter after two Oaks defeats, with spring targets including the Empire Rose Stakes.

Getta Good Feeling is unlikely to race beyond 1600m as a four-year-old, with Danny O’Brien conceding his filly lacked a killer punch at the end of last week’s G1 Australasian Oaks.

Although she was held up until the final 200m and wasn’t able to build momentum at a ley stage of the race, O’Brien was hesitant to make too many excuses for the filly, who finished three lengths behind Panova.

It was the second time the So You Think filly has been beaten as favourite in a G1 Oaks, having also gone under in the VRC Oaks over 2500m during the spring.

O’Brien confirmed that Getta Good Feeling has gone for a spell and will be aimed at feature races up to 1600m in the spring.

The Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) shapes as a suitable assignment in which she could attempt to win a G1, while big-money races like the Golden Eagle (1500m) and The Invitation (1400m) could also appeal to connections.

“I don’t think she would’ve beaten the winner (Panova) but she did get held up for a little while and didn’t have the momentum when she needed so the race got away from her,” O’Brien said.

“But we’re not making too many excuses.

“We might see her in the spring kept to a mile and shorter.

“She’s disappointed twice in these Oaks races and has gone in favourite both times off lead-up form in shorter races.

“She’s probably better off over a mile.

“She’s had a good season, she’s won a couple of Group 2 races but hopefully we can find a Group 1 for her as a four-year-old.”
