As far as pitches go, two of Australia’s oldest racing clubs coming together was always somewhat ambitious, regardless of the practicalities.

Betsy revealed on Wednesday that the Moonee Valley Racing Club had been approached by the Melbourne Racing Club to gauge any interest in the two joining forces.

The pitch came as the MVRC undertakes their biggest redevelopment in the club’s history, while the cashed up MRC’s approach follows a similar conversation with the Victorian Racing Club in 2025.

But as Betsy also reported on Wednesday, the Moonee Valley Race Club were seen as unlikely to accept the invitation.

Today, that has been confirmed. It is understood MVRC meetings this week solidified that position.

The Valley this week rolled out the red carpet and hard hats to show off the progress of their track to the likes of Damien Oliver, racing participants and select media.

Oliver gave the new-look Valley track a tick of approval, who now works for Ladbrokes, the club’s biggest sponsor.

During the tour, the Valley CEO Michael Browell apparently ‘’politely declined’’ to comment on the merger to Newscorp.

Browell, who has driven the vision and concept, plus Racing Victoria have been proactive in assuring members and the wider industry that the crucial development is proceeding on time and on budget. It’s an important message as racing eyes the historic return of racing to the track in 2027.

But the merger talk won’t go away. Whether it’s the Valley, the MRC or the VRC, there will likely be financial carrots dangled at the clubs in 2027 that make commercial sense at the least for the board of the big clubs to consider coming together.

Politically, it’ll have the support of the state government and Racing Victoria.

More importantly, it’ll have the support of members and punters, who will win from better membership options, potentially more cash for wagering products or crucial reinvestment back into the sport.
